Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance

Good entry title for Shin games?
I wanna play one of the shin or persona games all the way through, but there's too many of them and I'm not sure how they all rank. I'm guessing it's a latest and greatest type of situation, aside from the story and Shin 5 should be the one I pick?

Even if I recommend against it because Denuvo, yes SMT V is a fantastic game that I'd love to play myself without having to resort to Switch piracy. Beautiful graphics, fun combat, all the good stuff you'd expect out of an SMT game. I do recommend, though I would warn against Sega's PC releases. Maybe look for a copy on Switch or PlayStation on ebay a bit after release. Or just buy the game, I can't stop you.
I think IV is the best starting point if you have a 3DS or can emulate one, but that's also one of the best mainlines by a mile so you might want to save it for later down the line. Nocturne is good too but if you pick that make sure you play with Maniax content.

V is not very good and it's not just due to lack of story, it's a barebones open world game with very little incentive given to anything you do and also has poor level scaling. It's not all bad but I wouldn't want it to be anyone's first experience with the mainline series. This version will probably fix a lot of its issues but I obviously can't say it will for certain since it's not out so as it stands I currently advise against V as a starter game.

SMT and Persona, despite being part of the same franchise, are very different from each other. Persona is more of a story-based RPG with a big focus on characters, while SMT tends to have fairly minimal story and character development and focuses more on party building and dungeon crawling.

Depending on whether you prefer story or combat in RPGs should influence your pick on which series to start with.

As for which particular entry, each series tends to have pros and ♥♥♥♥ to each game, so it's not quite as simple as "newest is best". Things tend to get more polished and user friendly with each entry, but that's about it. For example: SMT5 has what I consider to be some of the best combat in the series, but the story and writing were incredibly weak (something they're hopefully fixing in the remake).

You'll find plenty of people that consider each entry as the best one in its series, as they all have things they excel and/or struggle at.

Personally, I would recommend the recent P3 Remake for Persona and the SMT3: Nocturne remake for SMT. They're both considered to be classics, and the remakes made them a lot more user friendly.

if going through the main dungeon and having your party members constantly pointing obvious ♥♥♥♥ out and making stupid unnecessary comments every 5 seconds to the extent of often repeating themselves sounds annoying i'd stick to p3fes over p3r

(why is there no option to turn that off jesus christ)

Honestly, I prefer FES anyway, but I will definitely admit that a lot of the gameplay didn't age all that well. A newcomer would probably have an easier time getting into the remake.

If you're willing to deal with older, less streamlined entries, though, I would probably recommend FES first. Remake is good for an eventual replay.
Any game is a good game to start in. none of the games really have any tie in with either other and if they do its more so cameo [persona 4/5] or they are part of the plot but you don't need to have played the earlier game to get the story [4A]

So if someone is wanting to get into the series just getting the latest game will do.
Yes.

The main issue with 5 was its story, but that seems to be the big thing that this version is adding to. So the main issue being solved easily makes this a good first game.
Yes, but the thing about V is that has a lot of eastern eggs from nocturne, most are side quest and when you talk to demons to contract them but also can be used as a mean to finish it and go play nocturne to notice where those eastern eggs came from

yes
It's a great entry point. I'll leave it at that.
Probably going to feel really good mechanically as a first title, though it may be worth picking an "older" one so you don't get used to some QoL feature that then isn't in the other games.

Otherwise - doesn't matter where you start, they don't exactly work in the same way sequels like GoW/Halo/etc. does where 3 picked up right where 2 left off; playing the other games just lets you appreciate cameo's/easter eggs more.
SMT 1 & SMT 2 - stories with many references to religion & mythology, great atmosphere, outdated gameplay, lack of official localization, need remake ASAP

SMT 3 - amazing atmosphere, introduced Press Turn combat system (which is one of best in turn based JRPG's), very minimalistic but well written story, least focused on the characters.

SMT Strange Journey - it's considered as a best game story wise in series, great character development, one of few JRPG's when you play as a full adult / non japanese cast, unique setting (Antarctica), very good dungeons, hard game (especially original SJ, Redux is a lot easier), gameplay wise is not that good like Press Turn from SMT 3-5, but still better than Persona

SMT 4 - it is like SMT 1 & SMT 2 on steroids, great story with many references to SMT 1 & SMT 2, good entry for newbies, improved gameplay from SMT III Nocturne, amazing music and atmosphere, one of best games on 3DS, more focused on characters than SMT 3

SMT 4 Apocalypse - continuation of SMT 4 neutral ending, Persona level writing but gameplay is considered as a best in series, even more focused on characters than SMT 4

SMT 5 - one of easiest games in series (in my opinion), very good gameplay but not that great like in SMT 4 Apocalypse (i prefer Smirk over Magatsuhi Skills), more focused on exploration & open world instead of dungeon crawling from previous games, story + characters sucks in this game
