There is a story but it's a very slow burn since they take their time building up the world and the setting and letting you sink into your role as adventurers before slowly working you into the overall plot of the game, especially in the earliest titles. If you like old-school RPGs where they encouraged you to think up your own characters and what they might be saying or doing in your head while playing, that's what this is. There IS a "finish line" in the sense that there is an end, it's not randomly generated content or anything like that.

Not familiar with that one so can't speak on it. The biggest inspiration for these games would be the classic Wizardry titles, if you're familiar with those.

one last question, whats this about drawing a map, is that in a sense you make your own map to beat monsters and so on? if so, then how would one finish a map, it could be endless i guess

As part of capturing the feeling of classic Wizardry style games, the DS titles utilized the touch screen by having it substitute for graph paper, so you would use the stylus to draw the map instead of an automatic mapping feature like most games these days have. The new port keeps that feature, albeit combining it into the main screen since we no longer have split screens like on the DS, and you can draw it either with the controller or, on the PC, using the mouse. For young'uns, there's also an auto-mapping option that draws floors and walls for you.

thanks, i was a bit uneasy of investing in this series, because i was afraid there was no story and it was just non stop dungeon crawling.

Understandably, it's a god-tier series but absolutely not for everyone. Definitely check out trailers or playthroughs on NND or YouTube if you're still on the fence.
