Anyway, that game you're thinking of that was like a Crossfire sequel was Mobile Suit Gundam Senki: Battlefield Record Universal Century 0081. It is, in fact, one of the top contenders for "Best Gundam Game ever made."
While it drops the localized damaged mechanic of Crossfire, it has much better performance (mostly stable at 30fps), excellent visuals, much bigger maps, a *fantastic* upgrade system that lets you develop entry-tier suits that plod around like the giant hulking robots of Zeonic Front to fully kitted-out custom units that can zip around the maps like something out of ZOE. It's also got a great (and *canon*) story campaign that's kind of like 0083, had 0083 been, you know, good, along with a free mission mode that lets you play through the war, essentially, as a nameless grunt. And while that mode had a few issues (you needed to be on a higher difficulty mode to get the better drops from each mission, and could only access those missions playing online) being able to do it co-op was an incredible experience.
Gundam Senki should absolutely be at the very top of any list like this. None of the other Gundam games -- especially those few that have been localized into English -- come anywhere close.
....
Beyond that, I'll second the Gihren's Greed nomination. On the subject of bizarre alternate timeline shenanigans, that's the gold standard right there. Though, personally, I'd much rather see a brand new entry in the series so that it might incorporate some of whatever it is that GQuuuuuux is trying to do.
Then there's Gundam Battle Universe, the immediate precursor to Battle Destiny, which is essentially the ultimate UC gundam game, with an enormous roster of playable mobile suits and a campaign mode that lets you play through all of the major conflicts, as part of each major faction, from the OG Gundam up to CCA.
Plus, it has late-UC unlockables, and any game that lets you rocket around as an F91-era suit is pretty damn appealing in my book.
It's only real deficiency is that it's... not exactly very appealing, visually. Don't get me wrong, it holds up much better than most PSP games -- it's mostly just the muddy textures and lack of visual flair -- but it would need a lot more work to look "presentable" to the same extent as Artdink's Vita games.
And, certainly, there are many other titles I could mention (True Odyssey/MS Saga comes to mind) but I think I'll end it at this for now. Don't wanna suck all the air outta the room with a too-long post.
Not as a new copy, no. I don't think it was ever even available digitally. But there are still a handful of secondhand copies floating around. Like right now, there are two or three listed on ebay for a decent price -- $25 USD or thereabouts.
EDIT: And, of course, due to it's age there's no real way to access the online content, which is really what makes Free Mission Mode the most rewarding, nor is it possible to pick up the DLC -- so no Gerbera Tetra or Rick Dias, which suuuuuuuuucks.
Just put them up then someone will make a fan translation for the west.
Nitpick: The mining base missions aren't in Odessa. Odessa is in Ukraine, the mining base missions are in Africa.
Anyway, yeah. Crossfire is very underrated.
I still remember facing that final mission as the Federation in a Gundam Ground Type and IMMEDIATELY losing my unit's left arm from the elbow down. Still ended up winning that mission though.
Gundam Vs Zeta Gundam
This came out stateside after Federation vs Zeta
Similar playstayle bug a masive what if campaign
centering around how many changes to the timeline
would need to occur before the horrible events could
be countered.
Mobile Suit Gundam Side Stories
Shares similar gameplay from Crossfire slightly better
execution and squad mates are better integrated.
The story is telling several different campaigns of various
side stories in the one year war.
This was made for the ps3.
Sadly it never made it stateside.
