How do I dock with other ships?

Responded to a distress call and assumed i could dock along side the damaged ship. Is this possible? What should i be doing to these damaged ships?

Turn on tactical view and use right click to move closer to the ship. While in tactical view, locate both ships docking ports. In tactical view they are represented by two circles close to some edge of the ship. Your goal is to dock by aligning your ship's docking port circles with theirs. Use U/O to rotate your ship and I/J/K/L to strafe and adjust. Be sure to check your thrust setting. Most of these ships are stationary and if you leave thrust above 0 while trying to dock you will just make things more complicated.

Strafing doesn't appear to do ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. The rotating works just fine though.

That's usually a problem if you're not at 1x game speed, for some reason.

U and O rotate, those other keys don't do anything

Funny that given I have used those other keys to manoeuvre so mining lasers could hit stuff and to dock with the ships that required it, even worked while trying to dock with a spinning target that was also moving slowly. Maybe I imply invested more in those thrusters.
