Tropico 7

Tropico 7

No more Mac support?
The Mac is missing from the list of announced platforms. Will macOS no longer be supported?

However, there is some evidence, such as job postings from their hiring process, suggesting the game is being developed in Unreal Engine, possibly version 5, with significantly updated graphics.

Hi Paw3l,

Tropico 7 will use our own engine and not Unreal Engine.

And as mentioned before:
Tropico 7 is scheduled for release 2026 and will be available with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, and on PC (Steam, Epic Games), Xbox on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation®5.
Further platforms are not planned.

Cheers

That's extremely disappointing, considering that the last parts of the series were available for Mac …

Not going to lie mate Apple make releasing apps for OSX a complete nightmare and it's not surprising nobody wants to cater for like 1.8% of steam users.
The older Tropico's were ported by Feral Interactive, they never had Mac support by default with their custom engines from any of the original developers. T6 had limited Mac support by default only because it was the only one built in Unreal Engine and could be exported to it through the engine itself.

I suspect Tropico 7 will be the same as the first 5, either Feral Interactive will decide there's enough interest and make a port, or it won't get done.

That is simply not true. I release apps and games on macOS. Sure, there is a bit more to do compared to Windows. But it’s just getting an Apple Dev Account, get the certificate and sign your apps/games with it.

Yes it is true Tropico as a game series has always been native Direct X 11 which means the entire game has to be put through a translation layer or rebuilt to use Vulkan for Linux or Mac OSX. it is not a "simple process" and requires a ton more work. putting huge overheads on a already small to medium size dev team for 2% MAC OSX and 3% linux users (steam hardware survey) is not worth the overheads and support required. There is a reason Valve has dropped MAC support for most of their games. it simply isn't worth it. Nobody wants to bother when 95% of users on steam already use windows 10/11

That's really bad. With Tropico, it was almost a given, there will be a Mac version...

Well, the world doesn't revolve around Steam ;-)

And if the game for Mac is not on Steam, then Mac gamers are not on Steam.

I'm happily playing Cyberpunk 2077 from Mac App Store and GoG Galaxy.

As mentioned even in the post before mine, there are developers who clearly see Mac support as viable and worthwhile, and we’ve been getting an increasing number of AAA titles natively or with excellent optimization:

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, RoboCop: Rogue City, InZOI, Dead Island 2 Ultimate Edition, Control Ultimate Edition, HITMAN World of Assassination, Lies of P: Overture, Sniper Elite 5, Crimson Desert, Frostpunk 1, Frostpunk 2, Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4 Remake, No Man’s Sky, Death Stranding Director’s Cut, Baldur’s Gate 3, Total War: Warhammer III, Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Metro Exodus.

The landscape is changing. Apple’s push with MetalFX, Apple silicon, and higher-end gaming hardware (finally 16 GBs of RAM in the base models) means it’s becoming increasingly practical for studios to reach Mac gamers. The numbers might not yet rival Windows, but they’re growing, and the fact that big publishers are now prioritizing native Mac releases shows there’s a market worth targeting.

Of all things, it’s strange that as more and more games are getting Mac ports, Tropico, after all these years and versions, is dropping support for Macs.

Tropico 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 were all playable on Macs when no one believed in Macs, and now, when the tides are changing, Tropico is dropping Macs. That's just weird.

Well lucky you Tropico 7 looks like it will be on unreal 5 so it will probably have mac support. but until they announce it i wouldn't be expecting it.

Yes, that's what keeps me hopeful.

UE5 is really tested on Macs already. We have up and running InZOI, Layers of Fear, and soon Cronos: The New Dawn.
Odd that the discussion now focuses on hope and probably, when the Dev already answered the question on the first reply.

But if you want to hold out on hope for 1% of the steam market share. um.. yeah,.

You’re treating Steam’s hardware survey as if it represents the entire Mac gaming market. It doesn’t. The world doesn’t revolve around Steam, and neither do Mac players.

Plenty of major titles have come to macOS outside of Steam, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition from CD Projekt RED on GoG Galaxy, for example, or games released directly through the Mac App Store. None of that shows up in Valve’s statistics.

So you cite "only 1% Mac users on Steam" you're ignoring an entire distribution ecosystem. Mac gaming today isn’t limited to a niche inside Steam; it’s supported by direct releases, alternative storefronts, and native ports that publishers clearly see as worth the effort. The audience is larger, and growing faster, than that outdated 1% narrative suggests.

What has been also mentioned in this topic, all previous Tropico games (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) were available for Macs so it's more than reasonable to ask for Tropic 7.

Available from Feral Interactive that makes ports of the games after release.

The only Tropico game that had a direct Mac release from its original developer was six, because it happened to be made with Unreal that can export to Mac.

The other 5 games were not developed for Mac in their original custom engines by their original developers, they were ported after development by Feral Interactive.

This is just a return to the normal business practice, the developer for Tropico isn't making a Mac version, they usually don't. You're at the mercy of Feral Interactive if they feel like porting it for Mac and getting a contract to do so, as they have in the past.

If you want a Mac version you should be approaching Feral Interactive and asking them to port the game as they have the earlier games in the series.

Feral doesn't respond on these forums and Kalypso (the publisher) has already stated they aren't making a Mac version. (just like they didn't for the first five games)
But like you said... Tropico 6 happened because it was made with Unreal, which can export to Mac.

The same goes for InZOI or... Tropico 7, which is again made with Unreal, so no need for too many custom tweaks.

Just because they don't do it on Day 1, doesn't mean they won't change their mind.

Multiple games finally made their Mac versions, well past their release dates, Sniper Elite 4, RoboCop: Rogue City, Valheim.

So just maybe if you're not interested in Mac gaming, just skip the topic and engage in topics that are relevant to you.

Has it even been confirmed that T7 is in Unreal this time? Only one out of six were done in Unreal. The first 5 were all custom engines. (The first 4 all being built on the same one, then 5 by itself and then 6 in Unreal)
