The issue right now is that (in my view) the reactor meltdown happens too quickly and is too punishing, sometimes you won't even have a chance to do anything about the reactor before it explodes. It's very annoying and I'm hoping for a patch to address it.
If you have to play one, then hope it has fuel in it.... if it has fuel, then you just need to quickly make ice for the coolant and the core will stabilize. If there's no fuel and no coolant... just run to the bell and ding it. No fuel and no coolant is pretty much unwinnable... you can try to yank the core within 10 sec of the ship landing, but good luck really...
To add on to this, an easy way to tell if the ship has a Reactor module is to look for a "Fatal" tag when picking a job. If it's tagged as Fatal, it's usually because of Reactor modules that'll explode and instantly end your run unless you act correctly and fast
It's by no means a perfect system since I think "Mysterious" clients for one can very much have them too if you're unlucky, but it helps for not picking them by accident
If I open the reactor and the fuel is gone, I immediately start working to remove it since that takes considerably less time than getting the fuel canisters out, refueling them and putting them back in.
If the core is dead I do the same without even worrying about the coolant
If it's just the coolant, then that's just a quick trip over there (always make sure you have a pump on hand if you know a reactor is coming up.
I have discovered though that I am a masochistic mechanic though hah.
1. Always hit the Green button on the reactor when you first pull it up. At least this has been the case for me and always opens up the reactor.
2. Turn fuel pump off
3. Turn off coolant
4. Unscrew the bolts (bottom left, bottom right, top)
5. Unclip the 3 clip flips (any order)
6. Rip out the core like your life depends on it, because it most definitely does
7. Breath, the core wont explode in your face now
When you put the new core in though, the coolant and pump are still off, so be careful
1. Ensure coolant is prepared (has working and active pump and stocked with ice)
2. Ensure fuel is topped off
3. Put new core in (costs 100 from store)
4. Re-clip the core back in
5. Wrench the top bolt in (will flip cover back down)
6. Wrench the bottom right then bottom left bolts
7. Max out coolant
8. Turn on fuel pump
after half a dozen instant deaths I can confirm that up is the off position, at least for me
Crap, I don't even pay attention now. I may have flipped it in my mind when remembering. Will alter the text
Fuel Switch Flipped UP --> OFF
Fuel Switch Flipped Down --> ON
Most of them I've seen, if not all, have come with it automatically on. If you try to take that core out, with the fuel switch ON, you will DIE. Flip the switch UP! Then proceed with directions as normal.
to be fair so far every other time I've been worried about a new thing to repair, it turned out to be quite simple to fix.
Thanks a lot! Idk how I supose to know when it ON and when it OFF
In practice, the fuel module will almost always be screwed, lol good luck
Firstly, the front screen is literally asking you if you're a qualified engineer. So, of course you are, or you're faking it until you make it. If you had pressed the other button, you'd be locked out for a while. I think it's like a minute and a half, or something like that. Long enough to kill you if it is a fuel problem, certainly.
The second is a fun fact. You can absolutely turn the fuel pump and cooler settings on before you put the core back in. You still need to wrench it to stop losing stabilty, but you can pre-flick the switches before doing so. You only need a new core if the one you're replacing is either very low, or showing a red X on the display.
Otherwise, Pump switch is up for off, and you usually tell if you need to panic or ULTRA PANIK on the job screen. If it lists fuel, TAKE THE CORE OUT IMMEDIATELY UPON LANDING.
And, if it doesn't show you and the mystery job is listed as FATAL, or just for good habit, Always check the reactor first before even touching the checklist, work on the fuel and cooler if needed in that order, then move to the rest of the ship.
You'll be fine.
