it's like these developers and CEO''s are a bunch of old dads and grandpas and they're like "what are kids into these days ?" and one of them goes like "kids are into graffiti, cartoons and that rap trap stuff" and they're like "oh yeah you're right, just make a game with all that crap and call it a day"
this is pretty much how EA makes games
Anyway I don't know why they decided to go with this art style, maybe they did it because they couldn't optimize the game for 60 FPS so they decided to cut down the particle effects and compensate for it with cel shading? I seriously hope it wasn't a creative decision, because if it was then whoever made it is in the wrong business.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not against targeting the younger audience more than the rest, but this feels like they targeted the 9 to 12 yo specifically with disregard for everyone else.
"So we're trying to tap into the black demographic, uhhh...graffiti and uhhh boomboxes and uhhhh...put a basketball hoop in the garage"
Like we're 5 seconds away from a weed leaf coming out of the exhaust
Never heard of any of those, except for Borderlands which I hate. Regardless, I'm pretty sure those games would've been just as popular (if not more so) without cel shading, you're giving credit where it isn't due.
Stop, go away.
For whatever reason EA made them looks almost just as shiny as the cars themselves.
It just looks weird and even stupid.
If you were to compare the art style of these characters to something like Vexille or Appleseed Ex Machina, you'll notice a small difference that creates a significantly different result vs the Unbound characters.
The Vexille/Appleseed characters have more emphasis on shadow and matte textures, whereas Unbound gives them more shine (even on textures like cotton and denim) and it looks off.
Both of those movies were released in 2007, which means we've had a superior example for these kinds of character models for the last FIFTEEN YEARS while EA decided to go with something that looks ugly by comparison.
I'm ok with the IDEA of cel-shaded/anime like characters in NFS, but they shoulda taken notes from Vexille.
Don't get me started on these pastel chalky looking scribbles they're using for effects.
The cars...the smoke trails...the light trails...the WORLD?
All this looks incredible.
I really wish they woulda reconsidered those other two aspects, though.
