Hi, never played an NFS before, I was considering buying one title of the franchise during the sale, this one is the most recent, should I get this one or not? Which one would you guys recommend?

I used to be a NFS fan, and this is my list I think it's the best.

The Need for Speed
Need for Speed II
Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit
Need for Speed: High Stakes
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010)
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit remake (2020)

People might start to scream "Where is Underground and Most Wanted". Yeah, sure Underground 1 & 2 aren't bad games, but those aren't Need for Speed games, period. Need for Speed is all about exotic brands, driving in beautiful landscapes. Not about Underground car tuning. Most Wanted is a little bit in between. Underground 1 & 2 and Most Wanted are still great to pick up tho, but the real NFS's are those others I mentioned.

The rest of the Need for Speeds, AVOID! All other NFS's are only worthy to listen the amazing soundstracks on YouTube.

Get Heat

Heat and 2015 are probably the better of the franchise. 2015 is the best in the franchise to this day. Id completely avoid unbound unless you're one of those creepy people that dress up like dogs. This game is designed for theater kids, furrys, and weebs.

All right thanks guys, I'll get Heat then, cheers.

If you don't agree fine, but do you really have to post "lmao" without even giving a argument? If you don't have anything value to add, then just simply don't say anything.

I can even tell by your reaction that you didn't even played the old Need For Speeds. Otherwise you wouldn't even post such a reply.

Laughing my ass off, while respecting your choice of games and whilst everything is subjective, I find these games to be recommended by you due to nostalgia and growing up with them as a kid. They are old, crappy looking and sounding and they are linear as in you just race and that's it.

Underground 1 is when the brand started to make it's big significance in its name, gaining a lot of popularity and Underground 2 perfected Underground 1 and basically that's when the franchise knew what it was recognized for. Great soundtracks, awesome cars, different types of races, great customization.
Then Most Wanted came and set an even Higher Point in the franchise thus becoming the best game in it and it is also the most popular racing game in the world.
After MW it slowly went downhill (although I still think Carbon is great and I even prefer it over MW)
Pro Street is also very good but I feel like it is for a specific kind of people as I myself don t really look forward into racing games that are closed in a circuit. That's probably also the last great blackbox game.

You should start with Most Wanted and Carbon since they hold great up to this day and they are the best NFS Experiences and from there on it's up to you.

If you want a linear NFS then play The Run, it's pretty good for what it is. Hot Pursuit Remake is also good but it's a bit more repetitive than The Run so either choose one or play both.
For the modern ones play Heat for overall modern gameplay and story.
You can then play Unbound or get it even now since it's cheap if you like the art style. I personally find it GREAT in terms of multiplayer. Graphics are good, sounds are good and it plays great. Story is absolute s**t. This game also has the worst soundtrack in the franchise but yeah multiplayer is really good.

Idk why you even ask this to be honest, Most Wanted is the most known one and it's a must play NFS if you haven't and others are extremely cheap so you can just get any and try them. Personally I also like Payback, it's just good-ish. 2015 has bad handling and awful cops.

If you play any of the modern ones (from Rivals to Unbound) you can get Unite mod for fixes, more customizations (I think), improved graphics and handling.

Those that you mentioned above were great for their time but I honestly don't think they are good for someone that just got into the franchise considering the standards nowadays.

Personally I'd say play Underground 1 -> Underground 2 -> Most Wanted -> Carbon -> Heat -> Unbound. If you become a fan of the franchise or something then you can try other ones as well and again, for something linear play The Run or Hot Pursuit.

I myself will never choose a racing game that doesn't give me open world and ability to customize my cars to my likings over one that does (I'd still play them if they're good)

get unbound.
JonBBYG Dec 3, 2024 @ 4:06pm
If multiplayer and online experience is what you want then Unbound is a no brainer. If single player and a solid career mode is what you are after then Heat is your thing. If you don't really care much and you want to have some fun for an hour or maybe less per day and you want to just jump in and play then HP2010, MW2012 or Rivals are for you.

The handling in 2015 is perfection, I'm not sure what you're talking about. The reason you're having such a hard time is because you have to tune your car very specifically to your driving. It's not grand theft auto where you just hop in a car and go. If you can't figure it out then you're probably just not a good driver.

You could read in my reply why I recommend those games and it ain't out of "nostalgia" or " growing up with them as a kid."

I recommend those because Need For Speed is for me a franchise about exotic cars, driving in a beautiful lineair landscapes. Sure, some do have open world like Most Wanted or the newer Hot Pursuit. But I could see passed through that open world.

With the old Need For Speeds, that's how it begin with anyway. The road EA took after Underground baffled me. Like I said, Underground serie's and Most Wanted aren't bad games, they are pretty good but no Need for Speed's kinda games.

After that, it went only downhill, especially the Unbound. I tried it and hated it every minute. The whole feeling, the atmosphere, the characters, awful story writing and all those awful game mechanics, all those heat and rep mechanics, just awful.

If these are your things, fine. But not mine, I want the exotic cars back, driving in beautiful landscapes. That is and will be the Need for Speeds I like and not all those cringy "yo bro" kinda games with earning rep kinda boring stuff. I just want to have awesome races in exotic cars in beatiful crafted landscapes, because that is and will be the Need for Speed I like, and therefor the true Need for Speed expierence.

I see your point but then it would have been just a casual and very simple racing game which if it had stood the same it would have never had the same sales and popularity. Unbound is great multiplayer only, the story, characters, art style, music and voice lines are awful.

I think Rivals is a good mix of your preference and what most of the other players want and is one I really like. The game still looks good and the map has beautiful landscapes. The map even so reminds me a lot of Hot Pursuit so much that it feels just like an Open World Hot Pursuit. Driving in that game and seeing the leaves falling in front of you is just majestic

I played Rivals a while back, but I stopped pretty fast. It was just to much for me, driving was weird, all those health bars and such, the whole feel of the game didn't do it for me.

Yes, the landscapes gave me the old Need for Speed feeling, but that was about it. You could literally hold W or point the thumb stick forward and still end up first without using the steering. Now that I watched some video's of rivals, I can see why I dropped the game back then.

You know, if UG/UG2/MW2005/Carbon were never made then none of us would be here, in a steam forum about an NFS game, typing weird, silly things. The NFS franchise would have been like the GRID franchise, very good games that never took off, maybe reaching cult/semi-cult status.

And while I respect your opinion, I mean you like what you like, you do you, I am not the one to tell you how to drink your coffee, but the Black Box era games are the reason why NFS is still here. They are the NFS franchise because that's where most people found out about NFS.

Oh, and you cannot buy any of these games that you are mentioning, with the exception of HP2010 Remaster.
