Do I need to play any previous Dragon Age games?
I've been pretty keen to get into this game, but from some of the stuff I noticed while playing the intro, I realise I could be missing a lot of references and backstory to characters. Is it a "must" to play the other games (or even just a select few) or will the game kinda explain a lot of this stuff going forward?

While this gives background knowledge and you know some characters in the world, NO, it's not needed to play the previous games to enjoy Dragon age: The Veilguard.

Ok cool, because I'm not gunna lie, I feel a bit lost at the beginning. Maybe the story is just slow at the start or something like that, but it hasnt really gripped me story-wise yet?

yes, you need to play those in order to avoid this one entirely and play actual good dragon age games.

Absolutely not, I have played the previous games and there are some familiar faces but that's it. You start as a random adventurer that joined a party for a quest.

It's on purpose the game starts you off in the middle of a quest and you gradually learn your background etc

Thanks a lot for this! Made me much more confident to just go with the flow in the game and see where it takes me :)

watch a Lore recap video that should suffice

No, because you shouldn't even play this one. Save your money and buy a better game. Or just waste it on drugs. Even that would be better for your brain than this rot.

Nah, the only difference is you'll go "Oh, it's that guy" if you did.

If you log in to Dragon Age Keep and create a default world state. You can actually watch a really good animated recap over the last three games.

But I would recommend to play them as they are great, I am still in the middle of Inquisition but may buy this one when finished.

Play Origns only. that game is a masterpiece. Everything after gets increasingly trashy.

How much of that is relation to Inquisition I've played all dragon age up to Inquisition, but I couldn't be bothered with Inquisition DLC.

You should, Dragon Age series is awesome.
You don't need to but, assuming you end up enjoying this one, I do recommend it for the future when you're done, if you love the world and the setting. Some great adventuring to be had.

The only thing I would say though is, it's kind of an odd duck series because of how different each game has been in terms of design philosophy and even mechanics sometimes. In a weird way, it's almost like the Star Ocean of western RPGs, in that every installment is pretty mechanically and stylistically different after the first two. (And really, in this series' case, after Origins.) So liking one I suppose is no guarantee you'll like them all. But I did (and am now confident I will this one as well after thoroughly researching it.)
