My review for the 'early access'

I really wanted to like this game, I really did, but the game won't let me.

This game looks great on paper, but in reality it falls apart as painfully as Warhammer Fantasy.

I looks great, the voice acting is excellent, the SFX sound punchy and it remains loyal to its source material, but that is where the positive aspects end.

Here are some of the most glaring issues.

The moment to moment gameplay can only be described as an erratic back and forth battle over useless victory points in the middle of nowhere. You are just trying to constantly funnel new units into this boring, unresponsive meat grinder of combat.

Once units start fighting, they are unable to be controlled, outside of activating certain abilities or retreating halfway accross the map.

The economy system is mobile game like in depth. There are a few upgrades of which only a few meaningfully change your units. The resource point system of capturing zones on the map is horrible. The price of upgrading zones compared to just buying more fodder to throw into the melee makes it so that you never bother upgrading your zones. capture points take about 10 seconds to be taken and can't be meaningfully fortified. This leads to there being no front-line to the fighting behind which you can maneuver your units or you know.......EXPAND YOUR BASE.

The dichotomy between units being slow as slugs and dying as fast as them too, makes it so that moving your units is the only meaningful thing you'll ever do in this game.

I don't feel like comparing games is fair, but in this case the similarities are staggering. It feels like the developer looked at Dawn of War 2, copied all the gameplay elements, streamlined them, put a Age of Sigmar coating on it and called it a day.

Only they forgot to add all the things that made that game so great, the interactive combat, the cover mechanics, the upgrades to individual squads and heroes, the pacing. All of it is missing.

This review might come of harsh, but that's just because i'm dissapointed. Underneath all of the terrible gameplay, is a promising Warhammer RTS. Something we haven't had since 2012.

There are a hundred more things i could criticize, such as the lack of depth, the bare bones roster, the frankly ridiculous price tag, the lack of information shown to the player(Unit health, Damage, Armour, movement speed), the empty non informative UI, but I'm tired.

I want this game to succeed, But In this state I can't in good faith recommend it to anyone.

A real shame.

Any RTS needs a testing stage, this game hasn't had it, the testing starts now, that's all.

Excellent review...falls in line with my Demo review of this game that was erased from the Steam forums. You can only hide game-play as bad as this for only so long. I was rooting for this game and I hope it gets adjusted enough to make this the game this Age of Sigmar Warhammer world needs to shine.

I feel the OP, but for me it looks great as a 1on1 PvP thing ... maybe?
I fear i am too old and slow for that now, anyway and the parts left out, kind of make the non-competition-game fall short. I wanna goof around with friends vs. AI or one another, but it is just a horse-race for capture points on symetrical maps with very little to do and/or advance.
Might be a cool nieche eSport thing, but well a dawn of war would have been nice.
Considering the price on top of that ... feels like i bought an overpriced tactical RTS for one run in SP campaign. :/

You can play single player and Skirmish vs the AI offline

Even the real miniature game of Age of Sigmar Is the worse adaptation of the fantasy Warhammer so you cant expect much from the videogame conversion which goes in the ever growing cemetery of mediocre Warhammer games. If you want a good Warhammer Fantasy rts the only option remains Warhammer Total war which Is setted in the Old World, not the amateur pile of unicorn s**t of Age of Sigmar setting.

Some people like murdering folk, doesn't mean we should entertain their opinion as valid anymore than yours.

AoS is pretty much objectively less popular than Old World and definitely less "known" to people, and its lore is imo far worse since it was designed from the ground up to be based around the way the minis game is literally played.

But hey, Games Workshop obviously believes enough people care more about AoS to not bother bringing back the Old World... oh wait, lmao.

Can't wait for the refreshed Old War minis and armies so we can see how many "AoS is good tho" bros dump it into the trash and pretend it never existed while humping all the updated factions and supposedly newly expanded factions like Cathay and supposedly even Ippon.

And we shall see how many developers choose AoS over Old World... especially given what Total War Warhammer did to convince GW they made a huge mistake maknig Fantasy Warhammer 40k.

As for this game, you guys are delusional if you think it won't meet the same fate as Dawn of War 3, but hey how many times has this cycle already happened, I guess.

People still screamed Anthem was Game of the Year even as EA themselves throw it into the garbage dump.

It's funny when the vocal minority push for super fast paced SC2 type click-fests when the system is based upon a turn based table top game.

Good on you Devs. There are folks that appreciate your approach.

But perhaps add a "setsimrate" command like DOW so that the RTS Red Bull chugging Super Clickas can have their flavor as well ....
