What's a reasonable file size for youtube?
As in, what should one limit the size of their film to in order to prevent people from being turned off by the time it takes to download? I am not very youtube savvy, and my internet speed is pretty fast so i don't really pay attention to these things.

For example, is 1gb too large?

Depens on the length.

If you want to put a HQ download in the description, the bitrate should be around 6-8 Mbit/s. The filesize should end up to be around 300 MB for a 15 minute video.
But people can actually download your video with keepvid. The quality won't be great, but the filesize is low compared to the HQ download.

I threw a 45 minute mp4 tutorial at 1080p up on youtube, the filesize was 977MB. What would you create in SFM that would be that large? If, for instance, your video is only 5 minutes long and your video is over 500MB, then you might want to check the format you are trying to upload. Something wrong with the compression scheme you've chosen.

Stick with something like an mp4 or image sequence placed in another container to keep the file sizes down. It depends on the codec you use as well. Some codecs like h.264 can still keep the quality while lowering the file size. For me, I don't care so much as I steal my neighbors internet to upload since it is 250X faster than mine, no joke. I would not worry so much about file sizes as long as you have fast enough internet and enough harddrive space. But, usually a 5 min file for me comes around 300mb.

Youtube rerender the videos you send them in their own format and bitrate, your original video's filesize has no bearing whatsoever on the time it takes people to dowload it to watch it. It only affects the time it takes for you to upload it.
