Changing day to night
I want to make a scene where you watch the sky change quickly from day to night. The problem is I don't know if you can change skyboxes within SFM, or how to make it look good if you can. So far the only thing I've thought of is to try to make a custom map where one part is day and the other is night but I'm not sure if I will be able to do that and it will probably take me way longer than I want to spend on this if I can. Does anyone have any tips?

without actually making a new map, the only way to really do it this: http://sfm-ponies.deviantart.com/art/SFM-Quick-Tip-Easy-Day-To-Night-Maps-351614731

quick and dirty being the operative words.

Yes, you can change skyboxes in SFM. Changing from night to day, well that's tricky because the environmental light is contained in the map and I don't know of any command or script that would change that light gradually over time.

To change the skybox, ensure you have the sky materials loaded in the proper SFM folders. Go to Console and use the sv_skyname [skyname] command, come back to the timeline and move the playhead. If the skybox is compatible, it will change when you move the playhead

Here's the koth_viaduct_event in a Rainbowland sky

The command was sv_skyname sky_rainbow_01

well the map can be a night map initially and it won't matter. I just want to show that it's day time but has changed to night. I'm more worried about transitioning skyboxes because they are actual art that might look weird to see fading in and out. I wonder if there's a way of faking it instead of using a skybox.

Anyway thanks for the help, I'll try what you told me and see what I can do with it.

I was thinking black void, the problem there is that you would have to construct the stage by hand then control lighting manually. There are a lot of cards that have brush and tree textures, and there are buildings and walls as well. But it would be a lot of work.

Speaking of black void, this is neat...

niiiice. I really need to add more games to my SFM. I have dota 2, but not added. Should probably grab the demos for few other games and plop them in there as well.

You could use a green screen.

could you paste in a custom background?

Haha, it's been like seven years since I posted this.

That's pretty cool though! I'll have to take a look when I have a minute.
