possible to make/get Ropes, Cords, Cables etc.
Is there anyway to make, fake, or download ropes or cords? I'm animating a character holding an old NES controller (can't go wireless) and I would like to make a cable hanging from it. I understand that it may not simulate the behaviors of rope--reacting to the motion of the thing it's attached to like it would in gmod--and that I may have to animate it manually or something, add all the little wiggles and waves in. I'm fine with that...Any Ideas at all?

Is there a particle system you might be able to use? 100% opique blackish and thin. That way you could attach it to the controller and then to the console??? Don't know, just a suggestion.

Most of the cable and rope models I've seen are static props with a roottransform and 1 bone.

Sorry can't be much help on this one.

I haven't done anything with particle systems in SFM yet, I've seen some tutorials on it so i get the basic idea. Could you explain more specifically how you would do that? If it's too hard to explain, or would take a long complex explanation you don't feel like going into, I understand, and thank you for the help. :)

I just looked through the particles that I currently have available and didn't find anything that i think would work. I was thinking that maybe thinning down the medics beam and changing the color to black might work, but to get something like that to work is beyond my skill right now.

It was just a thought as I have not seen any cables or rope that can be used in the manner you need.

R234 or PalmliX, any suggestions here?

Meh. I'd agree with Pte Jack. Except that Particles can't be black. Blackness becomes transparent-ness.
Well, at least when you colour a coloured Particle to black, it's invisible.
I don't know yet about if you'd actually take a black cirlce texture, scale it down, etcetera etcetera.
And in that case, I'd say it would be logical to have 3 or 4 "Control Points", as to make the "wire" more able to swing.

So at the moment, I'm not much help, either.

I still think your best bet is to get a 3D Model of a rope, add some bones and export it to source format. For example from here: http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/maya-rope-resolution/661306

I'd be willing to take a crack at it myself but I can't guarantee success.

OK I just re-read your post and realized that rope model isn't what you need at all. I'm currently working on a solution that may bear fruit. Hang in there..

wow, thanks everybody! yes, I'm thinking I would prefer a solution with some sort of animateable model of a rope, to a simulated, complicated, particle system that I will probably mess up ha ha. Thanks for trying whatever you're trying PalmliX, I will definitely "hang in there" :D

Thought I might have found a solution for you on GMod, but all it offers is consoles, plugs, controllers, and game cartridges, no wire... Sorry

Thank you for trying :) Yeah, I downloaded some consoles from GMod but they didn't come with wires as you said.
