SFM For mac
Come on. So many people uses mac and are blocked from access to the source filmmaker. Maybe take a little time off working on SFM for now and focus on the multi-platform capability?

Do it Valve! I would love to use this.

No one seems to want that now.

I DO UNDERSTAND however, that mac is not a gaming platform. But mac IS A video editing/proceesing/animating platform isnt it? Doesnt source film maker fit into that? So I have a good reason to say that source film maker will run better on mac. After all it's not a game we're talking about here
I don't think Valve realizes this

Meh, personally, I'd rather have a mac. Don't get me wrong, i like win7. but The fact of the matter is that Windows is a massive resource hog. The minimum system requirements to run windows is (and has always been) generally 2 to 3 times that of ios and most linux builds. those extra resources would better be spent on gaming, or animation, or what have you. By stats alone Macs and linux systems should be more powerful them PCs just by virtue of the fact that those OSs are doing more with less. then when you add in beefier hardware upgrades it makes it even more impressive. (that idea of "comparable pc" is strictly born from the notion of those OSs being similar in their resource management to windows, which, they are not. It's kind of like saying a store bought cd is better then an mp3 cd only because the store bought cd can play in more players)

The problem is exclusivity and compatibility. THAT is what is keeping Windows at the top. there are just too many programs that aren't set up for other OSs or that CAN run but because they aren't optimized, run awkwardly. even down to things like flash (try to going to a flash intensive site on a linux machine (groans)). all these little problems add up and make those alternatives less attractive. which, admittedly, is what they were going for.

Yah I'm a little mad towards snobby, elitist Mac users (not you, you seem to be nice) that are constantly telling me that I'm not a true creative professional because I use Windows, but not towards that guy, I'm honestly trying to give him good advice. I mean, have you seen the price difference between a Mac and a comparable PC?

Odd that the only elitism and snobbery shown in this thread has come from PC users. I'm frankly disappointed at the level of childishness shown here. I had expected more civility from this group.
We share a relatively same opinion

I'm not dissing Mac at all, but no, 3D animation programs tend to work better on Windows.
Most colleges and movie studios use Windows to do the work. Mac kicks Windows' butt in editing a video though.

Still, SFM isn't even finished in Windows, so I doubt we'll see Linux or Mac until they're done with this version.
SFM does run in wine, but some people have sound problems.

So when they perfect SFM to a good extent, they could branch it out to the other operating systems. Also, wine seems to stop its process of wrapping or something(I haven't used it for a few months so I don't remember the name)like halfway through on most steam applications.

I just tried again, Wine(the WineBottler, to be precsise) will give me a message on the console and some application called saying "###ERROR### Command 'find /Users/USERNAME/Desktop/NAME OF PREFIX/Contents/Resources/drive_c/users/USERNAME -name * -type l -exec sh -c rm "{}"; mkdir -p "{}" ;' returned status 1.
Task returned with status 15.

So, someone on youtube mentioned they almost got it to run using PlayonMac.
I tried it - I ran Steam through PlayonMac, was actually able to download and install SFM, it even booted up (getting my hopes up).
However, once it loaded, I got an error message, and then it shortly crashed. Here is a screenshot:

Not sure if this is helpful to anyone or not, but thought I'd post it here anyway.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix the error message?

Well I'm trying to find out if there's any other way to run it besides bootcamp. Bootcamp is the last resort. A full copy of Windows 7 is expensive (especially in Australia where is costs around $270 retail)
There are a couple of wrappers out there, but none of them seem to actually run SFM in Mac OSX. It is a damn shame there is no workaround for the lack of direct x support.

I got that message on my old laptop which is windows but the graphics card is so outdated I don't even know if it runs anything
Sigoshi Jul 1, 2013 @ 11:20pm
Im able to run it on linux pretty fine with PlayonLinux, so I guess PlayonMac should do the same? Don't hold your breath though, I highly doubt a mac is really SFM capable. Go back to Imovie man, thats what it's there for.

I ran SFM on a Thinkpad a while back and got this message. The only issue I got was some lighting issues and a white line across the screen. Just turn your camera bloom down and bam you're ready to go on a bad graphics card
