People need to start making more original SFM videos
Can we please stop getting TF2 versions of scenes from popular movies/TV shows/web video and start making things with original plots and characters?

Big problem with that is that I just spent the day yesterday lip-syncing the 9 red team players to a song that I WAS going to use. I uploaded a test to YouTube and got slammed with a 3rd party content label. Now I expected that, because it is a well known song and it is copyrighted. (Thank the gods it wasn't a copyright strike!!!)

After accepting the label, I checked to see what countries would not be able to view the content, The whole Western Hemishpere was banned from viewing it. SO, I deleted it.

What reallly picked me off is that I researched YouTube for the content I was going to use and found a whole bunch of people have used the exact same content I was using, all of them visible to me. I uploaded mine and half the world is banned from see it... go figure!!

Youtube's content ID system. it scans most everything as it is uploaded against a database of music and video, looking for copyright issues. it also scans their own database but that takes longer. and the system is iffy. I made a random robot chicken style edit video with one of the segments being set to a piece of Bryan Adams Get Off Of My Back. it was flagged instantly. but a music video set to freebird I did took a few months to get flagged. The adams song I just deleted the segment and reuploaded. the freebird one is there but isn't viewable on mobile or tv (consoles, etc), or in germany, but can be viewed anywhere else on comp (unless you know a workaround like ps3youtube or one of them.)

I made this. It's one of my first sfm movies, and in saying that I'd like to think it's of fairly high quality. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvlBKMnE7Y4 a bit short though.

Palmlix thanks for sharing (both yours and the others) enjoyed them quite a bit actually. One question though, what particle system is the laser shots for the turret in "Prime"?

The animation is pretty good for a first try; certainly better than a lot of other SFM videos I've seen. I see much potential in you.

I'm not gonna lie, that was one the most epic SFM videos I've seen so far. Congrats on the 200, 000+ views, BTW.

By all means continue to make SFM videos with Valve characters, but make your OWN plots.

From personal experience (I write novels), thinking up original plots can be challenging, especially since a large majority of ideas are already used up one way or another. Considering how difficult it is to create animations on Source Filmmaker without relying on other software, it will take people months or even years to make truly original videos with original plots. (If I'm not mistaken, Valve took two years to make Meet The Medic, which is only about 4 minutes long. They even had outtakes)

With the littlest time possible, the best that most people can do is to change an existing one or adapt from another person's idea. Still, every now and then, a big project made by the patient and "not-so-lazy" people would be done and the good ones will slowly pop up.

Plus, Youtube's tendency to put copyright strikes or warnings (within reason) on videos featuring other people's music almost makes it impossible to create potentially original videos that uses music that does not belong to Valve.

As for me, I'm still new to Source Filmmaker or animating in general so the vids I make have plots that are no more original that most people have uploaded. I am working on other bigger projects but I only have so little time to work on them. If you want some examples (or if I'm allowed to advertise my vids), here are some vids I made

Attempted to mimic Meet The Medic.

I'm a wrestling fan and I saw no one making a wrestling based vid using SFM.

I've been working on some maybe more avante-garde kind of things that try to get away from the embedded politics of SFM/TF2. You might like them!

Most of the original stuff is still in production, its only been 8 months. Just wait a while.

When SFM came out last June and people startee using it, I noticed that there was a surprising lack of originality, with most SFM videos being Meet the Heavy edits or TF2 versions of scenes from popular movies/ TV shows/ video games/ etc. I assumed it was just a phase and ignored it, believing people would get more original as time went on. Turns out I was only half right. People have started to make original SFM videos, with original plots and stuff, but I continue to find an over abundance of not-so original SFM videos.

Every other SFM video I see is just a TF2 version of a popular movie/ TV show/ game; an animated version of Game Grumps; or, worst of all, a video based on "that-little-girls-show-that-shall-not-be-named". Even several months after SFMs release, SFM videos with original plots/ characters (eg; "Real Boy" by Chaofanatic) continue to be a miniority.

And before anyone says, "Well go make your own SFM video than", let me say this: I WOULD, but 1) I cannot animate for the life of me; and 2), even if I could, I'm a lazy sack of protoplasm anyhow.
I guess everybody want to see stupid Meet the Heavy parodies where he has Nope.avi syndrome, and other unfunny crap.
Hakurei 13 JUN 2013 a las 1:15 p. m.
TF2 is great, but I would love to see others get made.
The only thing that destroys projects for me: The lack of IK Rigs.
raptornx01 13 JUN 2013 a las 1:35 p. m.
Lack of certain models and maps has been the reason I haven't been able to do some of the ideas I have.

HunkGolumpki 13 JUN 2013 a las 6:28 p. m.
I get why somebody would want to have all custom made models and materials. For copyright purposes or other; but saying that's the reason why they haven't made anything with original plot or dialog is nothing more than an excuse unless they've been working on some massive project, behind all the filler.

If you want to make films on your own, you're going to need to write, or find a writer. You can't just coast by, getting views by using someone else's written material. It's cheap, hacky, and I can't respect it.

A few test videos, sure. A couple of well animated scenes from your favorite movies, why not. That's fine.

But when you've got dozens of 30 second videos, using audio clips that you stole, just because it's too hard to write something yourself and get it voiced; you've gone past the "I'm just buying time until my real project is finished" stage, and have reached the "I'm a talentless hack who likes to steal other peoples creations and call them my own" stage.

Not having your own materials and models is understandable. People actually go off to college to learn how to do that. Nobody expects you to become a technical wunderkind all on your own. If you decide to do that anyway, that's amazing, and congratulations to you. But constantly "borrowing" from other media is nothing short of laziness and theft.

But, that's just my opinion; and who am I, really.
raptornx01 13 JUN 2013 a las 6:49 p. m.
there's a difference between being lazy and just not wanting to. some, many infact, enjoy short random bits of humor and if someone enjoys doing that then by all means, keep it up. if someone wants to do more, then thats fine too.
