one note from the comments
"Valve has moved the TF2 files. Open GCFScape and go to:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf
Then open the file "tf2_misc_dir.vpk""
for loading custom items

The first thing doesn't work. I went to the folder "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf" and I couldn't find the file "tf2_misc_dir.vpk" I found a "tf2_misc_dir" though and I tried to open it but it doesn't do anything. (I ran it as admin to).
and when you look at the type it should say valve pack file.
also, you have to open it with gcfscape. and it'll give you a list of folders models, materials, particles, etc.
I don't know how to set show file extensions. The file type also says "Source Game Add..." Lastly, when I try to CTRL + O (open) with GFCScape it only shows the folders, none of the files.
