Has anyone tried video reference?
Its a technique in animating is where you take a video of yourself and try to make a near replica of it in sfm through pose to pose. If so then does it give off a good result? I haven't tried it and I cant seem to find some in youtube or in google.

I assume you didn't put a big effort finding these videos. It was easier to write here, was it? Anyway, you did it right, here are some of the best:

And there was also a movie about a spy, who was singing a musical or something from a spy movie, but I ouldn't find it now.

We have mocap nowadays. The use of video referencing is getting rare. At least for helping with animation.

To be honest, I had just 10 minutes of searching and just gave up and wonder why those videos never came up during the search.

Facts: Not all people have a mocap thing. Not all people have space for a shooting place even if they had a mocap thing. Not all beings are bipedal. Blah blah blah. I see how "video reference" could help, but I don't think it's something used a lot for Source FilmMaker.

Also, exaggeration is quite necessary for quality animation, so copying what people exactly do IRL wouldn't be the best choice.

Actually I believe they used mocap for the biped characters and the rest were manually animated.
