What I do is spawn a light, use the Element Viewer to make it an uberlight (as they are better for the following), set its roundness value to 1, change its texture to "white", and then go back to the animationset editor, put the light far away from what I want to give shadows, change the shadowAtten thing to 0, set the farZ thing to high, and same with CutOff and maxDistance, then set width and height to 0, and then tinker with edgeWidth and edgeHeight as I please. I of course also lower the intensity just until the shadow is clearly visible.
Just place a light, or use better software. For a night map you need to change the map itself.
