Where to find a good particle explosion
Hey everyone, Justice Retro Hunter here.

I'm almost finished with my first animation/trailer and for the final touch i need a good explosion! Similiar to the explosions used in this video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jw7Lk1SEFik&list=PLmx5NIR6PO5tn4ZSnaNEuEspkoWJqEsRN

Not sure whether that particular explosion is Team fortress stock, but i cant seem to find one, anyone know how i can replicate explosions of that magnitude? or where to find good explosion particle systems.

The first one looks like a modified cinefx explosion from tf_movies. The second is a modified dire ancient destruction from Dota.
thanks! I needed to use the Particle editor tool to figure out what to look for, it happens to be the cinefx and than you have to change the "Particle system definition" to one of the 10 or so files on the drop down menu.

another question though, the camera i have is set to a very low "tonemapscale" set to .001 (to give a nice shadowy dark effect, however the particle explosion is also dark . is there a way i can make the explosion brighter without changing the tonemapscale?

I always like the mvm tank destory fire ploom....thing. It's in mvm particles and is called tank_destory. The bigboom folder has some nice ones; my favorites being mvmAcres and mvmAcres_small.

getting a darker map will probably fix your second problem there. as far as i know there's no way of changing how much light a particle emits, but rooting around in the particle editor may prove otherwise.
ya thanks for the help.

I did a lot of playing around, turns out that duplicating the particle effect makes it brighter (barely but after about 10 copy's it gets there)

the particle editor is a different beast, i couldn't find anything to change its lighting.

I wonder what would happen if the material the particle uses has $selfillum turned on.

@iFlame
Sorry I'm late. The Tank particle explosion is in the mvm particle file in tf_particles. The mvmAcres and mvmAcres_small is in the bigboom folder, very bottom.

EDIT: mvm_tank_destroy in the mvm particle file in tf_particles, and firesmoke_collumn_mvmAcres and firesmoke_collumn_mvmAcres_sm in the bigboom folder
