My rant on SFM and it's animation controls...
Okay, so I come from being a user of blender. I'm probably pretty biased because of that, but the controls in SFM drive me insane to no end. The way you select bones is absolutely ridiculous. Why the hell do you have to hold ctrl just to select a bone? I'm sorry, but that's a huge pain in the ass and a hastle in the workflow of an animator. I have a small pinky so it's a huge stretch for me to press ctrl on the keybard, and to have a finger on there at all times wouldn't work either because if you want ot stay with the WASD Layout for camera movement, it would just be really awkward. In blender, or any other program for that matter. It may seem like a minor hastle, but it just doesn't work for me, at all. I came into trying to learn SFM as a hope for quicker rendering of my animations, but it doesn't seem like it's going to work for me. I do like the way you can implement TF2 and stuff, but that doesn't matter at all to me as I would be creating my own animations from scratch. Another Gripe I have with SFM is that there isn't any shortcuts to your selection tools. Again, this may seem really minor, but as an animator, when you're trying to go back and fourth between selection quickly, it's a huge pain in the ass to have to click your icons and the bones you're trying to switch back and fourth on while holding control, it's a mess. Sorry SFM, but I don't think I'm going to be able to make the switch unless Valve adds some customizability into your program, because having your users stick with the defualt controls doesn't work for everyone.

Seems Valve agree with you on the first point, since they changed it so you don't need to hold Ctrl to select bones in the Dota2 version of SFM.

What do you mean by selection tools? If you mean move / rotate / screen manipulators, there are keyboard shortcuts for those.

Where do I get the other version of SFM? Also, what are the shortcut keys? If those are solved than that would pretty much get rid of most of my copmlaints.

Default shortcuts for manipulators are Q-W-E-R. You can rebind them in help > Keyboard Shortcuts.

stack some hours in the tool. you'll get used to it. more or less. i think everybody got a bunch of different keyboard layouts for different tools in his head. it's mere habits, but sure... some controls and stuck controls are unbearable. even blender has them. every tool got them. to note is that some shortcuts in sfm aren't even usable on non-qwertz keyboard layout. that is crap.

I keep thinking I'm in SFM while in Blender.
Good thing I can set its keys to resemble Maya's controls somewhat, which is close to SFM's.

Oh okay. Will regular models from the workshop still work with hit?
episoder Jul 27, 2015 @ 6:41pm
@detonatress i didn't model alot but i came from xsi controls to switch to other srt buttons. blender now is different again. same for the camera controls. it's usally "hold whatever other and push that button" to dolly/pan the camera around whatever. i mainly use wasd for sfm's camera. everything else sux to hold/press it that way. i don't get it in my head. and they don't use the scrollwheel to get me around the models - damn middle finger. and... i dunno how many times i pressed spacebar to get the camera to move like that habit from hammer. :)

for animation i can only scratch in the motion eddy cause the buttons are missing in the graph. it's just clickery. mhh. i don't really like the curvature and sheets anyway. *shrugs*
