animation: model snapping back to original position
Hey I don't know if this is the right place to ask this since its likely full of people askign a whole bunch of questions never to be answered but I thought I'd try.

I'm trying to make a simple animation of spy taking his cig and flicking it. I got him to grab hold of it, and the animation is smooth via round, shift scrolling etc in the time lapse.

But when I get to a certain point in sfm he snaps back to his original model position; do I have to re-position him again from that start point, or is there a way to simply say, drag the model out as I change it?

here is an image of what I am seeing http://prntscr.com/7n9xhq
basically he has his hand on the cig until that dump down, he automatically resets
back to the default stance of when he is brought out as I've shown in the image above.

When creating new animation, have the right side covered all the way until you see the triangles on the edge of the green layer. But in your case, you could move that playhead a bit forward and then use the green layer to select past that point and use Playhead slider (works like Round slider but will copy position/animation all over the selected portion.

I will illustrate what I mean if you did not understand it.

Please do Illustrate; I understood some of it but still its confusing. I got the animation sequence of him grabbing his cig but as you can see in the image, his hand is now supposed to pull away (taking the cig with it) and flick it. But as its halfway through the play, his hand and pose snap back to default at the dump. This is probably the only problem i am having animation wise because everything else is smooth.

Just make sure that the entire area I've marked with red is covered by the green layer and that your current green area is no longer green. The playhead should ideally be where that black arrow is (where I wrote "Or here.")
Use Playhead setting to change the new green area into a continuation of the animation.

Just make sure that the end of your green layer on the right has some triangles when you drag its right edge. It means it will make the character's hand continue to stay in that pose pretty much infinitely until you move it.

ok, one more question if I might. How do i remove the spies cig from his model? I'm running him via an hwm model on rig.simple but his cig is not removeable. have I used the wrong model or is there some sort of trick?

There's hide_cig slider I think in the unknown bone group.

Hmm ok I don't see anything like that, but at least I got my animation fixed, I'll look into it via the internet if nobody can offer me help on how to hide the cig.

Oh wait, there is one for HWM version. I remember it but I'm not sure its actual name. Yep, I'm definitely sure.

You said you applied rig biped simple on the model, this might have hidden it. Go to the gear on Animation Set Editor and make it show hidden models or whatever it had there (I didn't start up my SFM at this time), this should show hidden control groups, it should be in the Unknown group like EmperorFaiz said.

If not, you could look for the cig bone and scale it down so it will become invisible.

EDIT, yeah, do the Gear thing > Show hidden controls, it will then reveal the Unknown group that contains Hide Cig. http://i.imgur.com/U8iNv7t.png
This will also allow you to animate the spy's coat.
