Enabling shadows on a greenscreen plane?
Is there a way to enable shadows on a greenscreen plane?

My characters are on the ground, so the shadows should be projected on the floor as well, but the greenscreen plane is unable to project shadows.

Here you can see that the shadows are missing in this final composition:

The greenscreen plane is acting as the ground:

Is there a way to fix this?

I think it has a selfillum VMT. You need to find the VMT of it and remove the self-illum code from the VMT. Note: shadows will change the way the GS gets illuminated, which will make it more difficult to remove during post-processing.

shadows are based on the ambient color. you gotta make the greenscreen vertexlit and used a dark room - means a map with dark lightmaps. i think that's that. i did that procedure with hulkbuster already. you can't have green people. that is the joke. x)

Any chance to do this on SFM with the element viewer?
episoder Sep 15, 2015 @ 2:28pm
nope. you gotta find and copypaste/replicate/override the material in usermod. the mat is...

workshop\materials\models\dasmatze\greenscreenpanels\greenscreen.vmt

change the first line to "VertexlitGeneric". ofc... double checked... it still keys 0x00gr00. x)

note: the models illumposition is screwed up. what i did real quick it samples radiosity from a random model's position. this' a lil more to care of/mess with. that's all i got to help.

Thanks for the effort Episoder, Vc Reflect for After Effects works really well for this, but it would have been great to do it directly in SFM.

Episoder, can you make a modified version of your canvas model as a greenscreen with shadows?
episoder Sep 15, 2015 @ 3:09pm
an upgrade? sure. could add some scales to it on the way. :)

Awesome!

i know there are ways to use shadows on greenscreens to get shadows on the composite, its done in movies all the time. i just don't know how to do it. lol

it's the same how photoshop or gimp does it. select everything close to green. in sfm it's even easier, casue it's always full green. no red and blue. that way you get a native green shadow. ;)

Great success with episoder's greenscreen-ed canvas!

Even with motion blur and bloom enabled.

Raptor, if the shadows are strong enough they will pass through the chroma key process, in After Effects Keylight did it right away, and the results are pretty convincing.

If you use Premiere or Vegas, BCC Chroma Key and Matte Choker can get the work done.

i use vegas, is that the default chroma keyer it comes with or do you have to dl a different one?

also, which canvas?

Yes, BCC is a plugin from Boris FX. The default chroma keyer in Vegas is very primitive, it can get the job done if the greenscreen backdrop is near perfect, that shouldn't be too hard with SFM. Again using BCC Chroma Key and BCC Chroma Choker is as good as it gets.

Note: Some Vegas versions come bundled with New Blue plugins, which include Chroma Key Pro, which is superior to Sony's.

This is the canvas:

good that it's working for you. i don't get tho how you got the green 'dirty'. i screen capped in my studio with an orange flashlight and colored ambient and it was still pure green. that's weird. but... well... :)

the optimal case would be to select the mask by that pure green. that works if you use just grey lights when mapping the green box. then blend aka multiply the shadow as a greyscale over the composite. that's what i thought is quick.

Because it's the the old version, since there are two instances of the canvas with different textures on the scene. Can you upload a zip of the new version to avoid an overwrite?
