Get rid of glowing textures?
I've looked on google about this, and all that kept coming up was
"mat_specular 0" and "buildcubemaps"
That did not work at all. It even made things worse.

Is there a reason why things should glow like that anyway??

Many different reasons, are the textures glowing in a map, or on a model? If on a map, that's where the Mat_specular 0 and buildcubemaps come into play. If on a model, it could be the way the textures were put together with what is being loaded through the vmt. $detailblendfactor 6, $colortint_base and $colortint_temp are prime culprits.

Some models are shiny.

The NES, the TV base, and the computer monitor.
And there re no $detailblendfactor 6, $colortint_base and $colortint_temp in the files.

Your lighting is too bright. Tone down the lights or the camera's tonemapscale (the former is preferable if possible).

yeah, the most obvious is usually the most over looked. As R234 says, either lower your light intensity, or it quadratic Attenuation or move the light off to the side so it's not pointing straight out from the camera. (see the guide on 3 point lighting in the guide section) You have to remember that lights, models and particles spawn right in front of the camera.

i have the same issue with a lightbulb and none of these is causing the problem. if i remove the lights, its still glowing in the dark and there is no textures
