Making character eyes invisible?
What Im trying to do is attempt to remove the eyes or sort of change the color from in-game.
Here's how I am trying to make it look: http://imgur.com/5DvorLC
Anybody know how?

you can find the eye vmt, change "eyes" to VertexLitGeneric that will make the eyes white. then you can use override materials to alpha out the eyes.

:o Is there any other way to do it, like in SFM? I don't want to mess up anything in the SFM and have to reinstall EVERYTHING all over again. :/

And how I use overide materials

I have found that using override materials will allow me to make almost everything on a character invisible EXCEPT the eyes. This is because of the way the eyes are an overlay material. The irises are a material that overlays and floats on top of the eyeballs. Using override material I can almost make them disappear, but not completely. If you look closely at the test I did on the Bill head on my YouTube channel, and look closely at the location of the eyes when I make it disappear, you'll see what I mean.

Add override materials (animation set right click menu), show in element viewer, set the eyeball materials' $cloakfactor to 1. Easy.

That's how you make them invisible. If you want to make them black like in your screenshot, set $cloakfactor to 0.5, and set $cloakcolortint to full black.

Really... I would never have figured that out... Thanks R234!!!

fair warning, that doesn't work on every model.

Son, you are officially my hero!!!! I got it to work! :)

...Okay, please explain to me how people can forget eyes on Team Fortress 2 characters being cloakable.

dunno about anyone else, but for me, I never use the tf2 character models. *shrugs*

Well, I certainly do. I also use pony models from time to time, of course. It's a shame $cloakpassenabled doesn't work with the Eyes shader.

Isn't that the old Half-Life 2 eye shader? The Pony models use that?
Zappy Jul 28, 2014 @ 2:21pm
Yes it is/Yes they do. $cloakpassenabled, which enables the render pass for cloaking, is only available on VertexLitGeneric and EyesRefract.

Well, sorry Vintage. Unlike you guys, I am still a noob when it comes to using the element editor and a few other not-soobvious features of SFM. And I can only find stuff like this out only by watching YouTube to strike up my inspiration.

yeah. the original models were made for gmod, when they updated them for sfm they only updated the stuff that was needed. adding flexes, higher poly count, fixing the eye flexes, etc. the eyes only give issues under specific circumstances like this.
