How to port models from gmod to SFM (without gmod)
Another porting discussion!

Anyways, I found a BUNCH of Star Wars models on the Garry's Mod workshop that I would REALLY like to use, I know the way of importing them WITH the game, but I don't have the game (and I'm not planning on downloading it, because I won't even USE it). I know how to port models, but I am a NOOB at rigging (i mean, how do you create those bones that the TF2 models have?!). How to I convert gmod models into sfm without the game itself?

I can help you, but maybe not entirely the way you want. If you wish to use models directly from the workshop: you have to have Gmod bought, and installed. The only other way is to user coderhire.com>find the mod you want>download the zip>unzip it>open the SFM files>Open the workshop folder>place the corresponding gmod files into the workshop files(I.e: The "Models" folder goes into the "Models" folder in Workshop file, and ect.)>Load up SFM>Create the new model>Set the filter to workshop>Look up the mod you want. The model will appear if done properly, and since it's a Gmod ragdoll it will already have jigglebones(9/10 times.) No scripting, or rigging required. Hope this helps, and if you're confused feel free to reply, and I can break it down for you. :D(Alternatively: you can ask a friend of yours who has Gmod to download the files from the workshop, and simply send them to you through something like dropbox. But it's important to note that they would need to use Gmad to decompile the .gma file for manipulation, and transfer.)

you have to BUY gmod? Wow,

anyways, I've heard of gmad, but I never used it (in fact, I opened it ONCE and never again.)

I don't really use GMOD, but I bought it anyway so I'd have access to the models. I have a good many of the Star Wars models from GMOD, most are pretty good and need no "tweaking", but some do, usually just an ambient occlusion fix...

I'm in the same boat as Capt Fuzzy. The GMod workshop is so thoroughly useful for SFM that it was a utter no-brainer to buy the game during a Steam sale, despite barely having used it as a game since.

Things like GMod (and, to an extent, CSS,which so many user-made SFM maps use textures or props from) are useful enough to SFM users that if you can spare the pennies*, it's worth wishlisting things like that so you get a notification of when they're on sale.

* Which isn't many, they're not expensive anyway and often hit discounts like -75% or -80% during bigger sales.

Great tip!

But with the HUGE star wars pack, they have literally EVERYONE except Leia, which SUCKS. I REALLY need to use her for an animated multi-crossover series.
Capt Fuzzy Sep 27, 2016 @ 6:07pm
I think SFMLab has a decent Leia model...

oh! Do you have the link?

(i COULD just rig the model I have now, but I don't have time for that, again I am not good a rigging, so there's that.....

I'M WORKIN ON IT!!!)

I found it, and ironically, she's a very DECENTLY made model, but her dress code....just...
no. XD

WUP! NEVER MIND! SAW WHAT YOU MEANT!!!!!!

Ay! And it's the same model as the obj file I was gonna port! Hurray!

The textures won't show up. It's invisible
Capt Fuzzy Sep 28, 2016 @ 9:01am
How did you install it?

Usually, if it's invisible, something is not where it should be, check the console in SFM, it will tell you where the textures should be, then just find them and put them where they should be.

UPDATE:
I downloaded and installed the "Ep. 4 Leia" model and it's working just fine on my end.
I tried the "Slave Leia" and it works fine as well, I figured "what the hell" I may want to do a Jabba's Palace poster or something now... :steamhappy:

There's a good possibility that you didn't install the model properly and that's why it's not working.

thank goodness you don't really NEED to unzip .zip files! You just click on the download and move the folder to the directory of choice

WITH your advice

it worked! Thank you!

Also, I'll try the first method when I have the time. For now I'm mainly relying on SFMLab for models I really need to use.
Capt Fuzzy Sep 28, 2016 @ 4:21pm
SFMLab is a good resource, no doubt about it, but there's also a lot to be said for the Garry's Mod workshop as well...
I've ported a number of models from there that I couldn't find anywhere else.
Garry's Mod is worth the price, if not for the game itself, definitely for the models and maps.
