What does HWM mean?
Like I know it's what you need for animating characters, but what does it mean exactly?

"Hardware morph". As in it's a GPU-/hardware-driven facial expression morphing system. That's basically what VALVe calls it, I think. Although that's not something a user needs to care about. From a user's point of view, it just works, and that's all a normal user needs to know.
