Alternatively, you could place some panel models between your camera and the model you're using for your avatar so that they make a frame-type shape. That's the best I can think of.

This is the idea I was thinking, regarding those panels. You might not be able to get a perfect square, but it'll give you an idea. :)
I'm pretty sure that's only applicable for lights, not cameras, and even then Source FilmMaker seems to use a square field of view for lights using the horizontal or vertical field of view that is largest.
