Follow the guide accordingly. Use a bit of logic to ensure you don't mess things up. It doesn't matter if it's mods.tf or gamebanana, these kind of work the same way since they are mods used for TF2.
To Zappy, you can't really assume that the reason it was posted on Gamebanana was just for the intention of being used as a mod. It could just be one medium for sharing the file publically with everyone, maybe they aren't aware of any other way. :/ Unless the author states explicitly that there shouldn't be any models of his used by SFMers, it seems fine for now, especially since most of the mods are just centered around where they can or cannot work.
I still feel it's somewhat important to make sure to have permission before using something. Someone not saying "don't use it" doesn't mean they allow you to use it, in the same way as something not being illegal doesn't mean it's legal. Either way, while asking for permission, one can also ask to have a version compiled specifically for Garry's Mod/Source FilmMaker usage, and that's a bit better to have than an edit of a mod, in my opinion.
