How to convert vtf to png or tga
so i wanted to convert a vtf file to png or tga and i copy/pasted one into a folder titled
unedited_vtf
and used VTFedits' convert folder function to convert it to png in another
edited_vtf
file (both of which are on my desktop). needless to say it didn't work and now i need help.

Assuming you have VTFedit you can export as a TGA file

Does this also include clicking "File" > "Open" at the top-left of VTFEdit, opening a VTF, clicking "File" > "Export" at the top-left of VTFEdit, changing the "Save as type" drop-down selection list to "PNG Files (*.png)", and clicking "Save"?

You can also use the Source plugin for Gimp. Same song and dance as VTFEdit (file, open, export, as .PNG), but you'll have more export options in Gimp. Here's the plugin:

If that's during the exporting process, please double-check that you clicked "File" > "Export", not "File" > "Save As...".

Please show us a screenshot of VTFEdit's entire window, with greyed-out option being visible.

I'm having this issue myself and couldn't find any documentation on it. Here's what it looks like for me.

You have a material (raw text file) open, not a texture. You can only export images from textures.
