The free ones is blender.

The paid ones are like maya, 3DS max, mudbox, zbrush

But whatever software you use, always. No, MANDATORY steep learning curve.

I highly suggest Blender. It's far more advanced and powerful than SFM but its learning curve is WAY pretty steep.

$1000 for what? If you’re thinking about 3DS max or maya or mudbox or zbrush then of course it’ll cost you money. That’s why faiz gave you free alternative so you can save your kidneys and liver

The Daz Studio program itself and many of the base assets are free, and there's a lot of free content out there through sites like DeviantArt, the Freebie sections on Renderosity, poserdazfreebies.miraheze.org and it will also import any FBX and OBJ files that you have, so a lot can be done with it without spending a cent.

... but yes, if you want to pick and choose what resources you want, it's certainly possible to spend a lot of money.
Still, it's a lot cheaper than many 3D resource sites out there, particularly if you're willing to wait for the right discounts.

Blender, since you can basically get Source Engine models (and others) into it.

BUT

It's more complicated, and decompiling Source models can break them, so you better know what you're doing.

Depends on how close you're looking for. If you want to do animations, XNALara is probably not the program to look into.

In any case, when it comes to XNALara, I can't see any particularly compelling reason to learn it as well as SFM. It doesn't really add anything over SFM*, at least not to the extent that learning a program like Blender does.

* The only thing I can really think of is 4 bone weights per vertex, but losing Source's still formidable flex animation system (and many other things) for that doesn't seem worth it to me.
