A prop, or an game mechanic (like L4D)?

For the former, check the workshop.

For the latter, just spawn a light.

Nothing in SFM works automatically, like in the games...
If you want a flashlight in SFM you have to spawn a flashlight prop, then spawn, position and lock a light to it.

7 years old.... you shouldn't use your brother's PC to use steam kiddo, you're gonna be in trouble for that you know as well as your brother.

inb4, fnaf... RIght click on the Animation Set Editor, and go to Create Animation Set for New Model

This is his mom. I monitor what he does and this is his own computer. He wants to do things that are beyond his years and he's asking for help in how to do it. I wants him to be able to create the things he wants and shows a passion for. I can only google so much and with out anyone in his life that uses steam he resorts to asking the community for help. I appreciate you giving him advice thank you.

Well ma’am, according to the steam terms and condition, the legal age for him to apply for an account would be the age of 13 so by whatever excuse, your son isn’t allowed to have a steam account until to that age steam has set. Also… while being a mom, you might… want to be highly aware that source filmmaker community has a 50% of their number who despise while the other 50% tolerates their presence.

If you truly care for your son’s online activity, at least have him explore around the age of 13 years old, the internet is a harsh place even for the youngest of user, your son if he’s got a microphone to be used for gameplay would be a huge victim of being featured on YouTube for people to react if he’s starting to make the server cringe over their actions.

Unless this was a bait then… heh… well played

This is my Steam account as I use it to enjoy games he also likes to play. I do not allow him to use a microphone to speak to anyone online. It's hard to stifle his growing curiousity when it comes to how things are created or animated. I've tried to find child friendly programs that can do what he wants but he seems to be beyond the basic 101 skills. I do keep a close eye on his activities and I appreciate the concern for him. Thank you for the heads up about this community. I hope you have a great day :)

Well… if you’re trying to find a child friendly game for your son, then you might wanna up your study and research over the community of the game you’re buying him. Ratings are just numbers, community are the one that determines the game environment. Now, I’m no child protection service but again, you really need to up your studying and be a step ahead with contents he would watch and interact with other players cause teens and trolls are his victims and if you’re not careful, again, he will be recorded and be shamed over the Internet that you have zero control.

Just make sure one thing around here, stay on the good side of the community, five nights at freddy’s (Fnaf) has an ugly reputation and most user from that fandom makes it hard to help due to how little details they usually give when they encounter a problem. Since your son (surprisingly young to have explored outside of Cartoon Network, Disney channel, and Nickelodeon website) is new, go to the newbies guide pinned in the discussion tab, if he has any trouble along the way, make sure to have him explain as much as he can as well as include screenshots of the problem or anything relevant to help make the picture clearer for others to help.

I would point out that this is also a breach of the Steam Subscriber Agreement (unless you have specific permission from Valve).

Section 1C, a couple of lines in:
"You may not reveal, share or otherwise allow others to use your password or Account except as otherwise specifically authorized by Valve."

Although I'm not necessarily saying I personally see the harm in it, Valve do reserve the right to cancel accounts without refund if they're found to be in breach of the agreement, so openly admitting to it on their own forums is not particularly advisable.

Valve isn't THAT brutal to just get rid of some parents account just because they let a child play on the same steam account a few games.

Two rules are broken at the same time so mom’s gotta do some studying about giving the son something else to use than sfm. I mean, 7 years old at that age back in the days, it’s either some gameboy, PS1 or some random CD computer games or a good time with an RC car at the park.
like people here actually care about rules or laws? 90% of the steam models are ripped from games illegally anyway against the original games TOS...

At least this kid wants to DO something cool with his time and his mom is helping him do so.

I'll help you out.

Like Fuzzy originally said, to make a flashlight, find a flashlight model by

1) Right clicking on the animation set editor, and clicking "Create an Animation set for new model"
2) Browse through the models in the list. You can keyword search for "flashlight," and see what comes up. Team Fortress 2 doesn't have a flashlight model, but you can download one here on the workshop https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=447325042&searchtext=flashlight

After you've spawned your flashlight, it will appear in front of your camera. Now again create a new animation set, but this time you want to click "Create an Animation set for New Light"

This time, it will spawn a light on the position of your camera. Adjust the light to the flashlight until you get the desired flashlight effect, and then LOCK the root transform of the Light to the Flash light model by clicking on the ROOT TRANSFORM of the Flash-Light, and dragging it onto the ROOT TRANSFORM of the Light. If you did this right, a little lock icon will appear on the LIGHTS Root transform.

Go to the motion editor, Select all of time by pressing CTRL+A Select the Root Transform of the Light, and then go into your PROCEDURAL PRESETS, and drag the PLAYHEAD preset all the way up. Now you should be able to move the Flashlight model freely within your session, and the light will follow it.

You can see that if you do it right you can get a flashlight like this (Skip to 7:15) (Warning here, it's mature content,so i suggest not watching it past this scene) https://youtu.be/BMe-qXbQMrI?t=7m15s

On the side note, SFM is way too advanced for a little kid unless he is 12 year old or more. To learn SFM you need to know and understand a lot of tools, functions, terminologies and more. Unless the kid is a super genius, he's going to struggle alot even on the basic stuff and most liekly discouraged to use SFM further. Kids of his age have "What you see is what you get" mentality and pretty impatient, and those characteristic are not suitable for learning pro-like software such as this.

Unless the account got viral or lots of people reporting it, Valve won't care just like their regulations on the store page.

I'd point out that it's not some arbitrary rule that Steam have chosen, the threshold of 13 years old is US federal law for the protection of children's privacy online, and is enforced by serious fines:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children%27s_Online_Privacy_Protection_Act

Steam is one of those companies that has deliberately elected to avoid the cost and complexity of complying with the law by simply disallowing people of under 13 to use their service, so they do actually have to enforce that limit quite strictly, given they have no other system to avoid being in violation of the law.

(Hell, I own/run a wargaming forum that's entirely based within the UK, but I still have to tip-toe around this law).
