what i've always used is the snipped tool on windows
Or
I've made a guide on how to export it on steam (if publishing on the workshop on steam is what you're going after) http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=787795000

You need to export, not save. In a program, saving is for the program's native save format, exporting is when the program needs to convert to another format.

(The way I normally put it is that DMX files are like a recipe. A recipe tells you how to make a cake, but you actually need to bake the cake before you can eat it).

You can try File > Export > Poster, but this has a lot of bugs, so we tend to recommend using Image Exports instead.

Originally posted by Zappy:
- Switch to the Clip Editor and have the scene (non-"work") camera active, then stay still in time until the bottom-right "Sample" counter loops back to "1 of X".
- At the top-left of Source Filmmaker, either click "File" > "Export" > "Image..." and save it somewhere with the filename ending in ".png" (without quotes) or such, or click "File" > "Export" > "Image to Clipboard", open an image editor, paste it, and then save it through the image editor.

This will export what's currently in the viewport (thus why you should allow the scene to "sample" before doing the image export), at the resolution currently set in "File" > "Export" > "Movie...".
If you need to export at more than 1280x720, then you'll need to launch SFM in either 1080p or 4K mode:

https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SFM/Rendering_at_1080p
https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SFM/Rendering_at_4K

Load the session, set the resolution in the File > Export > Movie panel, then hit Cancel, save the file (I highly recommend saving under a new name with "1080" or "4K" added to the name, as SFM will crash if it tries to load sessions set to higher than its current resolution mode, so knowing what resolution a session is saves a lot of headaches) and reload that file before trying to export.

(This does sound like a faff, but it's not too bad when you get used to it... and honestly, the bugs in poster rendering can be bad enough that this is less trouble).
