Avi export has been pooched in SFM practically since day one, and don't even think of using Quicktime for Windows, that is a massive security risk. Apple ended support for Quicktime for Windows last year. That means there have been no new updates, patches or security patches. Even Apple has advised Windows users to not use it, that should tell you something right there, but just in case that doesn't do it for you, maybe this will: https://www.us-cert.gov/ncas/alerts/TA16-105A
It is a warning from the US government about the security risk of Quicktime for Windows.
Most of us use and recommend image sequence renders for our videos.

And those "frame" counters in the viewports display as red if at a point in time where they're displayed as non-whole numbers, I think.
In other words, try to simply stick to seconds or other non-"frame" timer display options.
If that's not what you meant by the red numbers, please show a screenshot of them.
