Depending on what you mean, try clicking "Windows" > "Layout" > "Return to Default Layout" at the top-left of Source Filmmaker.

… why…? The tiny x button does nothing but trouble.

They did say "accidentally", so the reason may be that they moved the mouse a little more than they expected to before clicking on something.

I've come to learn that it is nearly (though not completely) impossible to 'accidentally' hit those little Xs, they are just too darn small.
I've also come to learn that the phrase, "I accidentally hit the little Xs" is actually an excuse for "I clicked on the little Xs just to see what they did, but am now too embarrassed to admit that I was really that ignorant"...

I actually sat here one day and performed an experiment to see just how easy it would be to 'accidentally' hit one of those little Xs, and after numerous random clicks (I lost count at around 130) all over the SFM interface, I finally managed to click one, so no, it's not completely impossible to accidentally hit one, but it IS highly unlikely to accidentally hit one. Rounded off, my experiment basically concludes that you have a 1 in 130 chance of hitting just one of those little Xs while randomly clicking about the interface.

Okay, that part wasn't accidental. I accidentally dragged the timeline into a new window and I panicked for no reason and clicked.

Well now I can't move/rotate anything. I rebooted SFM. I'm in motion editor, made sure of it.

Then you must have “accidentally “ muted the track which when you mute the timeline then you can’t move or rotate anything you place in the scene.

Make sure you select the right shot you want to edit into. Go back to clip editor and make sure the shot is selected.
