Sounded to me like you didn't follow as being taught in the video.

I would recommend to not do that at all. It's best to have the parts that take place in different maps be different project files, or just render the shots that are separately.

Personally, I recommend exporting part of the animation on one map, then just switching map manually and exporting the rest from there.

I don't know why Zappy and R234 don't like the map switch in a single session method. You can only work on one shot at a time anyway and if the map isn't loaded for the shot you're working on, it just a quick changelevel (mapname) command in the console to load it. I prefer to keep a single project in one session instead of having to bounce through multiple sessions for one clip. But everyone does things differently in SFM and all the methods given work fine. So, you now have 3 options to choose from.

It switches map mid-export for one, and secondly if you want to change the map in order to work in it so you can see how it looks, you have to re-do the stuff in the element viewer every time.

What stuff in the element viewer? And what do you mean it changes map mid point? I don't get what you mean.

Clearing out the "mapname" of the session, which I believe gets reset every time you load a map (as if it doesn't, how'd Source FilmMaker know what map to load when loading a session anyway?).

I don't mean that. I mean it changes map mid-export. By that, I mean it changes map while exporting.

These are the options you have gotten on this thread.
(Note that they're sort of 3 different options, not the same one.)

Once you clear the session map, it stays cleared. You add maps at the shot level.

That is correct, the shot level map is loaded as the play head enters a shot while rendering.
