Particles are if you want a self-animating cloud of sprites like smoke, muzzle flashes, glowing orbs or rain - not just for anything that needs to be transparent.
The shapes of this are too complex to be a particle (or at least to sensibly be a particle - it may be theoretically possible, but it's not a good idea), it will need to be done as a transparent model.
I highly recommend it. It's often as little as $2 during Steam sales, and there's a wealth of things you can plunder from their workshop once you've got it.
I've got little interest in the gameplay (although it can be a way to waste an hour or three), but I don't regret having bought it.
