That's objectively the best way to export for best quality and little chance of export corruption compared to other export options.

By installing QuickTime, which you should NOT do at all, since it's an actual security risk for computers.[www.us-cert.gov] Instead, do an image sequence export and use a video editor (besides Windows (Live) Movie Maker) to combine the images and sound file into a video file. Blender is a choice for that, and is free and available on Steam. Refer to the guide Capt Fuzzy linked to to learn how.

Won’t QuickTime still be a viable possibility as long as you keep your computer guarded from viruses (as you’re supposed to anyway)? I know this is a bit off tangent but QuickTime is used for a lot of things and maintaining your computer seems easier than uninstalling QuickTime for the risk for one single program

You could do that, however, in addition to it being a security risk, it's .mp4 export through SFM is still pretty bugged.
A lot of times you will end up with either an oversaturated or undersaturated video, meaning that it will be either too bright, or not bright enough...
If you try to export to .avi, that usually breaks and completely corrupts, so image sequence truly is the way to go for the best quality videos that you can get...

Keeping your computer guarded by definition includes not having insecure programs installed.
It doesn't matter how well you've defended the front door of a fortress if you've left the back door unbarred and unguarded.

The risk isn't anything to do with using it with SFM, it's just having QT installed at all (for any purpose). There are ways to reduce the risk, but you'd have to be very cautious when installing it, and frankly there's no point.

Image sequences are an objectively superior export method in so many respects - much more reliable, more control over quality, better colour and contrast, you don't lose the entire export file if SFM crashes halfway through - that it would be pretty silly to use QT even if it weren't a security risk.

The only issue is that the export file can't be directly viewed in any old video player (although on a good computer, programs that can open image sequences will let you view them in real time without needing to re-compress them).
