Source Filmmaker

model file and associated vtx files are out of date!?
I have a problem in source film maker that is when I try to download certain files from the steam workshop, sfm crashes. I was downloading some just to get the tiered hats. Some such hat are the universal translater and the robro 3000 To fix this and get the hats in sfm, I opened tf_misc_dir in gcfscape and extracted the vvd, mdl and vtx files into my sfm directpry. my robro 3000 worked fine, but the universal translater has black and purple chequered textures, and an error message keeps popping up in the console: model fileModel file 'workshop/player/items/all_class/invasion_universal_translator/invasion_universal_translator_engineer.mdl' and associated vtx files are out of date'.It does this with all of the classes for the hat. How can I fix this?

The vtx file out of date warning is completely unimportant. It just means the model was compiled with a DirectX 8 version (which SFM doesn't even use anyway, so it's irrelevant).

As far as the other stuff, where exactly did you extract to?
Well
Since then, I have tried putting the model files in C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\SourceFilmmaker\game\tf\models\workshop\player\items\all_class and C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\SourceFilmmaker\game\workshop\models.
When the files are in all_class, the models show no texture, just the purple and black chequerboard, but when in workshop\models, It just has no textures at all(invisible). It has also been saying 'failed load of VVD data for:C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\SourceFilmmaker\game\tf\models\workshop\player\items\all_class

The materials (VMTs) are located in tf2_misc_dir.vpk in "materials", but the textures (VTFs) are located in tf2_textures_dir.vpk, also in "materials". You will need both the materials and textures to get stuff looking properly. Not having both of these causes pink-black checkerboards.

As for the "out of date" model file "error", that's just if there are .DX80.VTX and/or .SW.VTX files, as Source FilmMaker only uses the .DX90.VTX files (and .VVD and .MDL). As Marco Skoll said, it's pretty much completely irrelevant.

As for the "failed load of .VVD data for -" error, that's if the model files (.MDL, .VVD, .DX90.VTX) are not located at the correct spot. The path shown in the error is where the model files should be, relative to models/. This is also what causes a model to be invisible.

Thanks. I have already extracted the texture files fromtf2_textures_dir but I am not sure where to actually put them.

Just extract it* to "tf", such that you get -/SourceFilmmaker/game/tf/materials/models/stuff.
If you get -/tf/materials/materials, just move it up one folder, so you only have -/tf/materials.

* Of course, only maps, materials, models, particles, and sound.

I now have this error:
workshop/player/items/all_class/invasion_universal_translator/invasion_universal_translator_demo.mdl : material "models/workshop/player/items/all_class/invasion_universal_translator/models/workshop/player/items/all_class/invasion_universal_translator/invasion_universal_translator" not found.
workshop/player/items/all_class/invasion_universal_translator/invasion_universal_translator_demo.mdl : material "models/workshop/player/items/all_class/invasion_universal_translator/invasion_universal_translator" not found.
The models are now back to purple and black, and they are here: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\SourceFilmmaker\game\tf\models\workshop\player\items\all_class\invasion_universal_translator and the textures are here:C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\SourceFilmmaker\game\tf\materials\models\workshop\player\items\all_class\invasion_universal_translator.What Am I doing wrong?

I don't know... Where did you get the model(s) in question from? And do you have the materials (VMTs) in the folder the textures are in? (As I said, you need both the VMTs and VTFs.)

I have the VMT in the same folder as the VTFs. I got the files from tf2_texture_dir and tf2_misc_dir

Could you please show a screenshot of this folder?
-\tf\materials\models\workshop\player\items\all_class\invasion_universal_translator
sure

That doesn't help as much as I had hoped, due to the full file-name of the VMT not being visible... But either way, the VMT is there. Is the model still pink-black checkerboarded if you reboot Source FilmMaker?
