Buy a flipping game for $5 buck and get access to the other forums.
Garry's Mod isn't like TF2 or DOTA2 - those games can be made free to play because they have active in-game economies that make money. Garry's Mod is driven by free user-made content, so there's no income from it other than its initial sale price.
If you're feeling skint, wait for the next Steam Sale. It's often at -75% or -80% off, which is dang good value for what it gets you. (And I'm talking just from the perspective of being able to loot their Workshop for things to put in SFM. I don't actually really play it much).

Or just shell out a couple bucks for a game full of 9 year olds and micspammers.
I never had any interest in Garry's Mod until I started messing with SFM.
Once I found out that you could use GMOD assets in SFM, I snagged a copy while it was on sale, but I would've paid full price (about $10 US) for it anyway.
As Marco stated, it's worth the price just for the sheer amount of assets that you would then have access to...
