How to not know your audience 101. Let this be a reminder to devs who are on their high horse, a demise like this could happen.

Are people allowed to declare "chapter 11" bankruptcy in China the way they can in USA? Because not all bankruptcies allow the entity to retain assets.

In fact, the whole point of a "Limited Company" is to protect private owners from having to sell their houses in the instance of a bankruptcy, unlike an incorporated company, at least it's that way in some countries.

I have no idea. but they claimed that the game is sold 4.2M copies, generated 18M revenue before tax, and that only covers 37% of their development cost. I won't believe a single word they say.

I fully agree with you 18m yuan is 2.1~ million USD how in hell can a company drain money that fast in a single player game which has a match 3 gameplay my mind is melting by thinking of the possibilities.

To be fair, it'd all depend on how many people were working on the game, what country they lived in, and what the cost of living would be. If a good amount of their staff was in China, 2 million USD would be a feasible sum to cover the living expenses of roughly 100 software developers, artists, and VA's.

But if some of the staff was located in, lets say Japan, and South Korea, weill, I dunno if 2 million dollars would sustain a project like this for more than maybe 2 years, to a year. The average salary you'd pay to one video game developer in North America could easily exceed 100 000 dollars a year in 2023. So take that sum and multiply it by however many staff members they have... sounds like it could be a problem.

The bankruptcy is for the company. For them individuals there's a lot of ways to get most of the money out before the bankruptcy.

Well I mean.. you saw what time they get off work everyday in the letter and all the company benefits like gaming station and cafeteria. If they REALLY gone bankrupt from that much revenue it's definitely not because of proper company workflow. They probably were in way over their heads when they earn so much in the beginning.

I would say the biggest possibility is that the bankruptcy is just an easy way out for them to stop caring about the games and the harassment since the reviews are beyond repair.

From what I read in their bankruptcy post they developed Mirror 2 on like 3-4 different engines, and every time they scrapped one version they lost money. Why would they develop this game 4 different times? who tf knows...

That's some "play stupid games, win stupid prizes" energy right there.

Censorship, you would constantly rebuild to accommodate different levels of it..

This may be the answer to the bankruptcy, too, trying to re-develop every time something drastic had to be cut or changed.

I'm just reading all the fallout now because I had moved on, but I thought they were just doing kiddie games now, but nope, they bankrupted themselves trying to cater to censors.
