Index controllers work surprisingly well for the game - especially if you never tested the Index controllers :-) If you could just add the Menu Button to the trackpad, you don't need to change anything else. The trackpad is not used at all in the game right now.
I'd strongly advise getting some Index controllers, these are used for many different hmds. 2c.
Some other immediately apparent (maybe just Index-, maybe more general) controller issues:
- There are lots of button guides with: "Undefined" type text... :7
- The in-game hands are some five centimetres below and behind the player's (EDIT: the "laser pointer" emanating from the middle of one's palm (...the way I see it rendered visually -- I assume this is the intended alignment) feels very right, but as it is, it shoots more out of my pinky finger :7).
- Given how the "telekinetic", and "snap-to" interaction with objects removes the need to ever twist one's wrists, I find myself kind of wondering whether it could be worth exploring using such a gesture as a thumb-freeing input option for turning around... The left-and-right-controller-B-button thing is really quite awkward.
I am not sure what sort of stuff is intended be in the main menu, but for me there is only: "New Game", and: "Options", and: "New Game" continues from where I left off last session (possibly picking up from Prologue), rather than starts from scratch. There is no "Quit" button on my main menu, and the in-game menu is unavailable from there, so I have to either exit from the SteamVR dashboard, or load into the game, to reach the in-game menu, and *then* exit.
I do notice that I can move around in the main menu environment (...but not force turn there), and reach the profile selection alcove, which lights up on approach, but I can not seem to interact with anything there.
Lovely game, though! :)
In theory you can add Index controllers to Quest 2 - but it's complicated and not officially supported:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ValveIndex/comments/l7motz/can_i_use_index_controllers_with_a_quest_2_using/
Also you'll need base stations. Two index controllers and 2 base stations will cost about $600/€600. I'd recommend getting a full Index kit, it's only $400 more for the hmd, and then you're sure of optimal compatibility. Maybe you can find a used Index kit?
Also see what Jojon is writing - it's much better for optimal support that you use a full Index kit for QC/QA.
That said, I really have no issues as I can access the menu when the game starts - and the game saves perfectly when I exit. But I've been using Index for soon 5 years, I'm not your average customer - and I do think normal Index users may greatly appreciate optimal support. Maybe some of your colleagues have an Index you could try - but you've probably thought about that long ago :-)
EDIT: Maybe a long shot, but try to contact Valve/Steam Support and let them know you're making a game for the Index, but cannot test for compatibility because you don't have an Index - and that Index is very expensive to buy for indie devs. Maybe you can borrow one or get a great deal, who knows... 2c.
To note, its only the first time it will prompt you for SteamVR Theater mode. It still runs in full VR
