Its game's all-time peak was 489,886 two years ago May 14, 2020, it dropped down to 192,132 within two weeks and balanced around the 50-60k mark for last year and this year. Does that mean the game's dead because it lost over half it's audience and more?
Its all-time peak was a staggering 953,426 March 3, 2022. Within a month that halved to 457,182 and in half a month 282,119. Today it hovers between 15k-30k.
Does this mean Elden Ring is dead because it lost 97% of its peak playerbase?
Point is every game has an opening audience that hops on the hype train/release of the game, afterall it's the new big thing that everyone's doing. After that point and overtime, a game filters out the people who do not like the gameplay, that do not like a grind some (XYZ) bug/feature and more especially, they don't make the game a constant thing they play everyday.
Even the factor of timezones, whereas some player in US East is getting on after a day at school/work, some dude in Germany is getting off to go to sleep. It's a constant swap of playerbase regions making up that playercount.

Jeez
while I can agree that 2k isn't quite as "optimal" for a steam playerbase but 2 things to keep in consideration here,
1 - TB is a Indie game studio! key note INDIE, they probably didn't even have a big advertisement for Chiv 2 so they go accordinly their budget like any other indie devs, just to be clear another indie game Killing Floor 2 only had 4k steam playerbase after the hype had tone down, many other more mainstream games like Elden Ring have a bigger hype over them since Dark Souls seems to be a pretty popular game
2 - One mentioned here on the forums that unfortunatly Slashers melee combat games tends to be niche, and just cant keep up with shooters... it sucks because I for one am hoping for the decline in shooters in favor of other genres. It is what it is unfortunatly
this genre is doomed with incompetent developers
chiv2 itself was a cashgrab anyway, they took the epic exclusive deal, now they took the game pass deal, and they never fixed their game properly
its nothing else than a beta scam
The novelty kind of wears off after 2 hours play. Moving like you're wearing concrete skates on a surface full of rocks isn't fun.
