Play at 16:9 on an ultrawide monitor

I have a 32:9 ultrawide monitor. For reasons not worth explaining, I would like to play this game at a 16:9 resolution, but I'm running into some problems with that.

If I use 'Fullscreen', the game takes up my full monitor regardless of the resolution setting. The game seems to somehow "know" that I have an ultrawide so the FOV and all that looks fine, but the resolution mismatch is quite noticeable.

If I use 'Exclusive Fullscreen', the game takes up the correct amount of space on my monitor, but it looks squished horizontally, presumably because the game "knows" I have an ultrawide and is trying to account for it even though it shouldn't in this case.

Windowed is locked to like 720p for some idiotic reason, so that's out.

I've tried pretty much everything I can think of (mainly messing with all the scaling settings in the Nvidia Control Panel) to resolve this with no success. At worst I guess I could screw with my monitor's resolution every time I want to play the game, but obviously that is far from ideal. Am I just screwed here, or is there something I've overlooked that could help?

unless the game has aspect ratio options where you can set it to 16:9 specifically, i dunno how you'd set it to 16:9 aspect

maybe if you set the desktop to a 16:9 resolution?

does your monitor support PBP? if you have two display adapters for your graphics card you can turn your 32:9 monitor into a dual screen 16:9, check your monitors on screen display settings for PBP
