The gadget upgrades are very useful and the suit unlocks include some very neat skins for Spider-Man. You can get by without both, but combat will be a little harder and you'll be missing out on some awesome appearances.
The DLCs added 4 to 5 Screwball challenges per DLC, and each one also gives challenge tokens. So it's easier to get everything upgraded / unlocked without having to reach Ultimate Rank on so many challenges. Bigger margin for error, I guess.
So yeah, it's up to you really. Personal thing. If you find getting all the upgrades / suits to be worth it, I might recommend watching some YouTube guides. The stealth, bomb, and drone missions have critical paths that, once you know them, make them really easy to pull off. There are YouTube guides for all of them. As for the combat missions, don't get hit and build up a high combo rating. That's the trick, there.
Enemy vision is pretty bad in this game. Make generous use of trip mines and large web launchers (can't recall the name), and just zip around with web takedowns when you know that other enemies won't see it. You can start with some perch takedowns.
The trick with the stealth challenges is that they aren't Batman: Arkham Asylum challenges. You don't have to get showy, do different takedowns, or the like. You just gotta be fast and get stealth combos.
Which... kind of sucks, truth be told. They're not very fun. But, it makes using YouTube guides to cheese them VERY easy. Other people have already figured out the sole critical path for each one to get Ultimate Rank. As long as you can replicate their actions, you're fine.
The only one that give me trouble was the one with two armed guys on a scaffold together. Took me a try or two to impact web them both before getting detected. The video made it look easier than it was. I suspect that he tried a few times, too. :-P
As for Screwball challenges... oi vey, cross that bridge when you come to it. Haha. Luckily, you only need Spectaculars on those to get the trophies.
Since I preordered the game, I saved some tokens cos of the free suits and drone gadget. Else I would be spending 4 Backpack, 7 Crime, 7 Challenge, 4 Landmark, 4 Base and 3 Research tokens extra
