But if you find the way to get fun with HK one day, you might pick this game up and give it a try.
The only similarities is that they both have a small character you play as, and they are both hand drawn, beyond that, they are VASTLY different. I'd say, buy the game and try it out for two hours. You'll come to find that it is VERY story driven, with lots of dialogue, the characters and relationships expand and grow as you give them items found in the game. The standard difficulty for this game is pretty steep, but this game has a story mode option where you can change the difficulty however you want in the game. Nine Sols focuses HEAVILY on parrying. If you can't learn that mechanic in the game, you're not gonna get very far. This parrying feels REALLY good. I haven't played Sekiro, but people say the parrying is as good as that. The game is very good, even if I have my gripes with the changes that the devs made with the map progression system, as well as changing the amount of jin needed in order to fix the robot....I still highly recommend that you at least try the game.
You'll like it if you are willing to learn parry timings and fail often while trying to do so. The game heavily relies on that. The story is actually interesting, though.
Nine Sols has more of a plot than Hollow Knight. You're not some mute amnesiac wandering around aimlessly. You have a definite goal, and you know what needs to be done to achieve it. And the plot is pretty great. It's not hard to believe this developer was known for horror games prior to 9S. This game can be very messed up. The opening in Peach Blossom Village really sets the tone of the game.
Nine Sols has a surprisingly in depth world and backstory, MUCH more so than HK. In fact, it's a bit overwhelming at first. Characters use lots of terms that you won't understand what they mean until later. The game could have stood to have a more in depth glossary. I ended up watching a lore video to help understand what was going on.
This game is fair - everything is telegraphed properly so nothing appears out of the blue without giving you time to react, so you need to WATCH those telegraphs and learn them.
This game is NOT a game about checking your reaction time, as the reaction time required is VERY generous.
The thing is though, it isn't about how hard it is, it is about trusting that you brain will eventually learn how to deal with the boss, or maybe there really is an IQ check that makes it impossible for some people to learn.
1. I'll give you a tip on these types of games, you break down each problem into it's parts, you have to see and memorise the attack pattern, just 1 part. And then after dying, you basically shadow box (practise against the imagined move that the boss is killing you with) a few times so your fingers get used to the timing and fingering of the counter.
Then you go a few times and expect to die til you can execute the counter without issues.
The more combo variations the boss has, the longer it takes to learn (you have to learn to time the parries for perfect parries, it is like playing a musical instrument).
2. If you're like me and get distracted by the music, then some times, it is better to turn off the BGM. I had to do that after getting stuck on Eigong phase 3 on normal mode and got sick of reacting to music mis-cues and getting some brain fog.
3. If all else fails, just turn on story mode and enjoy the game. The platforming is a lot easier than hollow knight, it is more linear and less ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ exploration than hollow knight (there's an area in Hollow knight, underwater area with some really dumb plat forming requirements that require you to die to learn your way through, but this one, you have your mystic nymph that can help you scout ahead to make things easier rather than having to die and respawn).
Both HK and this are excellent games, but where they intrinsically differ is one focuses on aerial jump/dodge timings and the other doesn't. Many players naturally skilled at the former will wonder why they suck at parrying in Nine Sols, yet there are also some who have the patience to learn bosses here, yet will always lack the natural dexterity required for precision platforming.
Game is wasting SOOOOOOOO MUCH OF YOUR TIME with nonsense boring ass WAY TOO LONG dialogues, nonsense sh1t animations everytime you interact with something * and and and. So close to uninstalling
* talking about getting hentaied to another dimension when you interact with a bonfire, „teaching“ you a mechanic you already did the last 2 hours. Everytime i find a bonfire I hope I can just REST AND GO ON instead of getting my time wasted before I can play again.
