PVE lovers are THE ORIGINAL playerbase of this game. THAT is the main problem.
It was bent over a barrel and given to PVP to chase trends.
Hmm... No, PvE'ers are the ones that liked the game far before you got shrouded into it. They are the ones that wanted to keep it alive and watched it grow for years, just to watch it turn into another "The finals." type situation except finals is free, so the playerbase won't be anywhere near as robust.
I agree with OP saying that people shouldn't name-call one another based on their preferences though, but PvP gonna unga-bunga, PvE gonna carebear stare (From your perspective.) I suppose?
Without the threat of PvP, the PvE is stale and boring. The enemies aren't that challenging/interesting to either beat or escape. The tension of whether or not to engage them comes from the fact that you may be drawing attention to your position from potential PvP and using vital resources that you may need to survive potential PvP.
Without the threat of PvE, the PvP is a simple arithmetic of best gear wins. PvE adds the variable of opposing forces that you can't predict, creating more complexity in how fights can play out. The PvE element means having the biggest gun in PvP could also mean you make the most noise and draw the most attention against enemies that you can't win against in a head to head fight.
Far before ? Watched it grow for years ? Really ? That is your narrative ?
Dec 10th, 2021 - Reveal trailer during the 2021 Game Awards.
Aug 9th, 2022 - Patrick Söderlund gave the update that they started prototyping a PvP-based game mode in spring that year

May 16th, 2023 - Blogpost from Aleks that the game shapes up to be a promising PvPvE survival extraction shooter
I am generous - I give you the whole timespan - 522 days, even if they gave the first update after 242 days (that is not years, not even one year).
They already started prototyping PvPvE one quarter after the trailer !
Since than 728 days passed.
(1008 days since the update from Patrick)
(1250 days since the reveal trailer)
Enough said.
You cling to the idea of one trailer.
You can't let go or accept the things as they are.
I can understand if you prefer PvE.
But why lie about the narrative ?
PVP players are too busy playing and enjoying games as is, when gameplay of pve-lovers consists of arguing in forums instead of playing games at all.
PVEkids dont play games, not even if its pve ones. Helldivers is a good example.
