I haven't played FRN, but have watched a lot of higher end gameplay. Comparing what I've seen from FRN against my experience in Ro2, here's a quick and dirty list.
FRN Pros
- Overall better soundtrack
- Much more casual friendly
- Less track memorization required due track lengths and presence of track map.
Redout 2 Pros
- Track design is much more creative and elaborate.
- Offers the better sense of speed at the top end.
- Very friendly community (mostly).
Redout 2 Cons
- Higher than average skill-floor.
- Longer tracks & lack of track map necessitates a lot of memorization.
- Long and difficult career (until you get the hang of things, then it's just long).
For a quick tl;dr of what RO2's about in it's current state, check out Roki's video that was made a couple months ago after the most recent patch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvlXSaenRL4
I think the main thing is that RO2 is comfortable with being its own thing (much moreso than RO1), while RMX was just... you could've removed the polarity system (pointless) and called it F-Zero# and no one would be any wiser.
also, Fast RMX really needs a steam port :p
You cant just say "the skill floor doesnt exist because of the assists.
The assists help to get people up to par with the skill floor
