Kinda confused about the emeralds in sonic 3 and knuckles.

I'm trying to get I think what's called the "Doomsday" level? where Super Sonic is flying through space and fighting Eggman. From what I understand I first need to get all the chaos emeralds in 3, which I've done. But I was under the impression to get the Doomsday level/good ending I also needed the super emeralds to get hyper Sonic. But I was told that's not the case? but I was told I could still get the Doomsday level but only if I don't get any of the super emeralds. But I've already gotten 3 of the super emeralds now so am I just locked out from getting the true ending?

You need either super or hyper sonic so if you had the 7 chaos emeralds then you're super but if you "lost" them when finding the temple then you need all 7 for hyper sonic, you haven't been locked out of anything unless you don't get all 7 super emeralds.

Yes for simplicity you need 14 if you got more than 7.

Otherwise 7 is fine if you didn't trigger super emeralds.

If you got 7 in Sonic 3 then you can go super but if in Sonic and Knuckles you triggered the temple then you lose access to super and need another 7 to go hyper.

Oh ok. So the super emeralds are just for hyper sonic form and not needed to get the true ending. I just need the 7 chaos emeralds then.

Well that sucks, but I guess I'll just restart my game. Don't really feel like trying to get the super emeralds.

If you restart then you'll have to get the chaos emeralds again anyway so why not just go for the super emeralds? Do some bonus missions to get anniversary coins to retry the special stages if needed.

Unless it's some Origins quirkiness that isn't on the original, you only need to get the 7 chaos emeralds for Doomsday, even if you fail to get all 7 Super Emeralds and don't have the transformation available.

You aren't locked out of the Zone after you unlocked it on your character save.

So it doesn't matter if I get all super emeralds then, even if I only get a few I can still get the real ending? I keep getting conflicting info lol.

Other person probably knows more than me, I know you lose access to the transformation for gameplay and assumed you'd lose it for the ending.

If Origins is true to the original on the Mega Drive / Genesis... You already have access to Doomsday (if that save is Sonic, the only character that goes there), and you'll get the S&K best ending (which it's not S3&K best ending).

However you'll have access to a stage select on the OG character select and you can get the Super Emeralds later (you can even get one, quit, and go to the same bonus) and replay Doomsday for the last ending.

Losing access to Doomsday is a miscoception that people have because they lose access to the transformation on the other levels.

That's correct, but you don't need to replay the whole game again for the best S3K ending.

After beating the game you'll unlock a zone select (that includes Doomsday)

you can select Mushroom Hill, get a Super Emerald and quit after the auto save. Repeat that until you have all super emeralds and select Doomsday and unlock the S3&K best ending.

Both good endings are preety much the same btw (you'll get an extra small scene with Knuckles and a changed after credits scene with the Super Emeralds)

You can go into the same ring gate with level select? I was under the assumption you couldn't because before you beat the whole game if you refuse to retry the special stage the ring gate is gone. I know there's a ring gate literally right at the start of S&K that Knuckles comes out of. So I can basically just farm that for super emeralds after I beat the game?

I've played a ton of Sonic 1 and 2 and beat 3 like over a decade ago but never tried going for the all the emeralds in 3 and SnK. So I found this all very confusing lol.

With the zone select unlocked the rings respawn after you reset the game. On origins going back to S3&K title screen should be enough.
