On the sprite on the bottom left, if there is an additional sprite available, there will be pips beneath them. If you click the sprite or navigate to it with controller and press A/X, you should be able to change them.
If it's impossible under the current engine, would it be satisfying enough to pick up a legacy version of the game to use custom characters on?
I am looking to change sprites for my own or obtained from the internet, example: Mario skin
The game seemed very fun to me because I could change the sprites to whatever I wanted, change the colors of their original designs, etc... and now I find myself discouraged from playing it again :/
Check out the "How I can play the old engine part". Just do notice that the old engine is not receiving anymore updates, but you can still mod it.
