How do weapon evolutions / unions work?

I'm new to the game. I just got the grimoire that lets me see weapon evolutions but I don't know how to get them to actually work. For example I unlocked the whip and empty heart one after another but nothing happens, and the grimoire still shows "???" next to it.

You need to max out the weapon rank first before you can get the evolution, and the evolutions come from chests that drop from mini-bosses and bosses that spawn every 2:50 iirc?
I wouldn't worry too much about trying to get that. I'd focus on just surviving as long as you can and maxing out the power ups. I would max out all but curse. Avoid curse until everything else is maxed and you have a really good feel for the game and you can easily go through each area without dieing. That will be easy to do with some time investment. I have less than 45 hours played and I have well over half the stuff completed in this game. I half assed most of it too.

I recommend saving those chests until you max out your weapons from leveling up and then later pick up it for final upgrade.

Also, if you're trying to do a evolution for Gorgeous Moon, I'd stay away from chests as possible when upgrading the Pentagon.

In addition to the above advice, Evolutions tend not to work until a certain stage time is reached (Around 11 minutes i think), all chest dropped before that will only level up unless Evolutions are the ONLY thing possible at that point, so don't worry about saving chests.

So from the top you need ALL Weapons of the desired Evolution maxed, their passives (Not needed to be maxed), A certain time limit threshold hit (Around 11 Minutes) and any chest from that point on.

I wouldn't worry about maxing weapons for evolutions straight away, focus on surviving and filling out passives/weapon slots first. This is again due to that pesky little time limit.

And just so you don't feel too comfortable, some of the later maps completely ignore the 10 - 11m chest requirement, and some weapon evolutions actually DO require maxed passives as well as the main weapon! No rhyme nor reason, just company policy.

Granted, these are all typically the bonus/late game maps and very late weapon unlocks, so for the majority of your early time spent learning these concepts, the above post is all you'll need to know. Just don't be too surprised when you accidentally evolve something at like 4 mins in!
